OceanStor 2800 V5 V500R007

This document is applicable to OceanStor 2800 V5. Routine maintenance activities are the most common activities for the storage device, including powering on or off the storage device, managing users, modifying basic parameters of the storage device, and managing hardware components. This document is intended for the system administrators who are responsible for carrying out routine maintenance activities, monitoring the storage device, and rectifying common device faults.

Expanding a Disk Domain

Expanding a Disk Domain

This operation allows you to increase the capacity of a disk domain.

  • Disks used for capacity expansion are available.
  • You are advised to use different disk domains to create storage pools for block storage service and file storage service.

  1. Log in to DeviceManager.
  2. Choose Provisioning > Disk Domain.
  3. Select the disk domain you want to expand and click Expand.

The Expand Disk Domain dialog box is displayed.

  4. Select an expansion method.

The following expansion methods are available:

    • Select All available disks to add all available disks to the disk domain.
    • Select Specify disk type or Specify the number of disks.

For some models, you can only configure Specify disk type or Specify the number of disks.

    • Select Manually Select and click Select.... On the Select Disks page, add disks from Available Disks to Selected Disks and click OK.
    • If only one disk domain is created, All available disks is selected by default. If multiple disk domains are created, Specify disk type is selected by default.
    • It is recommended that you expand a disk domain by Manually select disks, ensure that all disks are from the same engine, so that disk domain on one engine reduces the disk failure probability and improve the read and write performance of disks.
    • If you plan to create a RAID 10 storage pool in the disk domain that you are expanding, you are advised to manually select an even number of disks owned by each engine for each storage tier in the disk domain to ensure the reliability of RAID 10.
    • You are advised to use disks of the same type, capacity, and rotating speed (except SSDs) at the same storage tier in a disk domain. If disk capacities are not the same, disks with large capacities may not be used effectively or may become performance bottlenecks, wasting capacities. If disk rotating speeds are different, performance may deteriorate.
    • To achieve the optimal reliability, resource utilization, and performance, you are advised to configure a maximum of 100 disks for each tier in a disk domain. For example, if the number of disks on a tier is D (divide D by 100 and then round off the result to N, the remainder is M), you can refer to the following configurations:
    • If D ≤ 100, configure all disks of this tier in one disk domain.
    • If 100 < D ≤ 200, configure all disks of this tier in two disk domains.
    • If D > 200, configure 100 disks of this tier for each of the first N-1 disk domains, and then configure the rest 100+M disks in two disk domains.

  5. For V500R007C30 and later versions, enable the system to use the enhanced data protection policy.

Table 5-46 describes the related parameters.
    Table 5-46 Related parameters

Use the enhanced data protection policy

After Use the enhanced data protection policy is selected, the system will check service configurations according to the recommended data protection policy to avoid configurations with low reliability.

Some product versions do not support this parameter. The actual GUIs prevail.

    [Default value]

  6. Confirm the expansion of the disk domain.

    1. Click OK.

The warning dialog box is displayed.

      • If the disk domain does not meet any of the following requirements, the system displays a warning dialog box:
        • Disks at the same storage layer in a disk domain are of the same capacity and have the same rotation speed.
        • All the disks of one disk domain come from the same engine.
        • A maximum of 100 member disks can be configured for each layer in a disk domain.
      • If Use the enhanced data protection policy is deselected, a warning dialog box is displayed.
    2. Confirm the information in the dialog box. Select I have read and understand the consequences associated with performing this operation and click OK.

The Execution Result dialog box is displayed.

    3. Click OK to finish expanding.
