Replacing a Fan Module (High-Density Disk Enclosure)

Replacing a Fan Module (High-Density Disk Enclosure)

This section describes how to replace a fan module.

Impact on the System

During the replacement of a fan module, the system's heat dissipation is affected and the system temperature increases. If the temperature reaches the self-protection threshold (for example, 55°C), the disk enclosure is automatically powered off, degrading the system reliability.

  • The spare part of the fan module is ready.
  • The fan module that you want to replace has been located.

You can locate a component in either of the following ways:

  • Log in to DeviceManager and go to the System page. On the System page, check the device view and locate the position of the component to be replaced. If the component has a location indicator, turn on the indicator. (For details about how to turn on a location indicator, see the online help of DeviceManager.)
  • Use the alarm indicator of the component to locate its position.

  • Do not touch rotating fan blades.
  • Remove and insert a fan module with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors.
  • Remove only one fan module at a time.
  • Replace a fan within two minutes. Otherwise, system services may be affected.

Tools and Materials

  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Label

  1. Perform a pre-replacement check.

Check whether there is a redundant fan module and whether the Running/Alarm indicator of the fan module is steady green, as shown in Figure 5-91. For details about the indicators on different components, see Running/Alarm Indicators on a High-Density Disk Enclosure.

You can perform replacement only when a redundant fan module exists and the redundant fan module is working properly.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Press the latch on the fan module to release the handle and pull out the fan module, as shown in Figure 5-92.

  4. Put the removed fan module into an ESD bag.
  5. Take the replacement fan module out of its ESD bag.
  6. Fully open the handle on the replacement fan module, insert the replacement fan module, and close the handle, as shown in Figure 5-93.

  7. Wait approximately two minutes and check the status of the fan module Running/Alarm indicator to determine whether the fan module is successfully installed. Figure 5-94 shows the location of a fan module Running/Alarm indicator.

    • If the indicator is steady green, the installation is successful.
    • If the indicator is steady red or off, the newly installed fan module is faulty, the slot for the fan module is faulty, or the fan module is incorrectly installed.

  8. Confirm the replacement.

After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for any storage-related error. If any storage-related error is reported, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After the fan module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
