This document describes the procedure for replacing the parts of storage system in terms of safety operations, preparations, and precautions.

Replacing the KVM (for 18000 V5/18000F V5 Series)

This section describes how to replace keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM).

Impact on the System

Replacing the KVM increases the complexity of device status viewing, device access, and network element management. Replace the KVM in off-peak service hours.


  • The spare part of the KVM is ready.
  • The KVM that you want to replace has been located.


Remove and insert the KVM with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the KVM.

Tools and Materials

  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Label
  • Phillips screwdriver


  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap. Open the front and rear doors of the cabinet.
  2. Remove the KVM to be replaced.

    1. Record the types and positions of cables on the KVM to be replaced and then remove the cables.
    2. At the back of the cabinet, remove the rear mounting ears of the KVM from the rear mounting bars. Keep the mounting ears for later operations.
    3. At the front of the cabinet, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the M6 screws from the front mounting ears. Remove the KVM from the cabinet, as shown in Figure 6-249.

    4. Keep the removed front mounting ears for later operations.
    5. Put the removed KVM in to an ESD bag.

  3. Install the KVM.

    1. Take the replacement KVM out of the ESD bag.
    2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to mount the front mounting ears removed in Step 2.4 to the replacement KVM.
    3. At the front of the cabinet, put the replacement KVM to the position of the original KVM and use M6 screws to fix the front mounting ears of the KVM to the mounting bar, as shown in Figure 6-250.

    4. At the back of the cabinet, insert the rear mounting ears removed in Step 2.2 to the sliding slots of the KVM and fix them to the mounting bar.
    5. Refer to records in Step 2.1 and connect cables of the KVM.

  4. Verify that the KVM is horizontally installed and firmly secured.
  5. Turn on the power switch on the back panel of the KVM.

Follow-up Procedure

After the KVM is replaced, label it for subsequent operations.
