This document describes the procedure for replacing the parts of storage system in terms of safety operations, preparations, and precautions.

Replacing a BBU (for 5300F V5/5500 V5/5500F V5)

This section describes how to replace a BBU.

Impact on the System

  • Replacing a BBU affects data security.
  • During the replacement, if all other BBUs fail, the system is no longer BBU-protected. To enhance data security, the system forcibly implements LUN write through, and the system performance is compromised.

Prerequisites

  • The spare part of the BBU is ready.
  • Configuration data has been backed up.
  • The BBU that you want to replace has been located.
NOTE:

You can locate a component in either of the following ways:

  • Log in to DeviceManager and go to the System page. On the System page, check the device view and locate the position of the component to be replaced. If the component has a location indicator, turn on the indicator. (For details about how to turn on a location indicator, see the online help of DeviceManager.)
  • Use the alarm indicator of the component to locate its position.
  • The two BBUs are installed in two power modules. Therefore, remove the power modules before removing the BBUs.
  • When a BBU is being replaced, the power module where the other BBU resides is working properly.

Precautions

  • Remove and insert a BBU with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the BBU.
  • Remove only one BBU at a time.
  • When a BBU is being replaced, the storage system does not have BBU redundancy. Therefore, you are advised to replace a BBU as quickly as possible.
  • A BBU must be replaced within three minutes. Otherwise, the system heat dissipation is compromised.

Procedure

  1. Perform a pre-replacement check.

    Check whether there is a redundant BBU and whether the Running/Alarm indicator of the BBU is steady green, as shown in Figure 5-54. For details about the indicators on different components, see Running/Alarm Indicators on a 2 U Controller Enclosure.

    You can perform replacement only when a redundant BBU exists and the redundant BBU is working properly.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Press the latch on the power module to release the handle and pull out the power module, as shown in Figure 5-55.

  4. Press the latch on the BBU and pull out the BBU from the removed power module, as shown in Figure 5-56.

  5. Place the removed BBU into an ESD bag.
  6. Take the replacement BBU out of its ESD bag.
  7. Insert the replacement BBU into the empty slot until it clicks into place, as shown in Figure 5-57.

  8. Open the handle of the removed power module, insert the power module into the empty slot, and close the handle, as shown in Figure 5-58.

  9. Wait approximately two minutes and check the status of the Running/Alarm indicator on the BBU to determine whether the BBU is successfully installed. Figure 5-59 shows the location of the Running/Alarm indicator.

    • If the indicator is steady green or blinking green, the BBU is successfully installed.
    • If the indicator is steady red or off, the newly installed BBU is faulty, the BBU slot is faulty, or the BBU is incorrectly installed.

  10. Confirm the replacement.

    After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for any storage-related error. If any storage-related error is reported, contact Huawei technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After the BBU is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
