This document describes the procedure for replacing the parts of storage system in terms of safety operations, preparations, and precautions.

Replacing a Cable

This section describes how to replace a cable.

Impact on the System

Replacing a cable may affect or even interrupt system services. Replace the cable in off-peak hours and back up data in advance to avoid unexpected service interruption.

Prerequisites

  • The spare part of the cable is ready.
  • The cable that you want to replace has been located.
  • Data has been backed up before you replace the cable online.

Precautions

Remove and insert a cable with even force. Excessive force may damage the cable.

Tools and Materials

  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Label

Procedure

  1. Check status before replacement.

    1. Check system status.

      Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check. On the Health Check page, perform inspection as instructed. For details, see Checking System Status.

      NOTE:

      If some items fail in the inspection, rectify the faults by performing the recommended actions in the inspection reports. Ensure that all other parts except the parts to be replaced are working properly.

    2. Check the status of the parts to be replaced.

      Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Parts Replacement > Parts Replacement. On the Parts Replacement page, click FRU Replacement. Then complete the check before the replacement as prompted. For details, see Replacing an FRU.

    You can proceed to next steps only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault as prompted.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Confirm the position of the cable to be replaced and record the cable's label.
  4. Cut the binding tapes and remove the cable to be placed.

    Do not look into the optical port without eye protection. The laser beams inside an optical port can cause damage to your eyes.

    NOTE:

    Before removing a SAS cable, gently push the connector of the cable inward. Then pull the plastic ring on the connector outward until the cable is completely removed from the expansion module.

  5. Put the removed cable into an ESD bag.
  6. Take the replacement cable out of the ESD bag.
  7. Write the content recorded in Step 4 to a new label and attach the new label to the cable to be installed.
  8. Insert the replacement cable to the position of the original cable.

    If various cables at different locations have been replaced simultaneously, ensure that the cables before and after the replacement have the same types.

    Do not look into the optical port without eye protection. The laser beams inside an optical port can cause damage to your eyes.

  9. Optional: View the indicator of the cable port, and determine whether the installation is successful if you replace the cable online.

    NOTE:

    Meanings of different indicator colors vary for different interface modules. In general, a red indicator indicates that the system has alarms or is abnormal. For details, refer to the Product Description.

  10. Bind the cables.
  11. Confirm the replacement.

    1. Perform a post-replacement inspection.

      After the parts replacement, return to the SmartKit page and click Replaced. Then complete the parts check after the replacement as prompted.

    2. Check system status.

      On the Parts Replacement page, click Inspection to check the system status again. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions.

    3. After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for any storage-related error.

Follow-up Procedure

After the cable is replaced, label it for subsequent operations.
