This document describes the procedure for replacing the parts of storage system in terms of safety operations, preparations, and precautions.

Replacing an Optical Module (for 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel Interface Module (Eight Ports)/16 Gbit/s Fibre Channel Interface Module (Eight Ports))

This section describes how to replace an optical module.

Impact on the System

During the replacement of an optical module, the system switches services from this module (4 array ports) to other ports on this controller or on the peer controller. If available links are unable to bear the current service load, host latency increases and the system performance degrades. If there are no other redundant links, services carried by the optical module will be interrupted.

Prerequisites

  • The spare part is ready.
  • The optical module that you want to replace has been located.

Precautions

  • Remove and insert an optical module with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the optical module.
  • Do not frequently or quickly remove or insert an optical module; otherwise, it may be damaged.
  • There are four links connecting to an optical module. If you want to replace the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports)/16 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports), ensure that all working links have backup links. You are advised to disable the ports of the switch that connect to the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports)/16 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) and switch the services on these ports to backup links to avoid interruption during the replacement.

Procedure

  1. Check system status before replacement.

    1. Check system status.

      Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check. On the Health Check page, perform inspection as instructed. For details, see Checking System Status.

      NOTE:

      If some items fail in the inspection, rectify the faults by performing the recommended actions in the inspection reports. Ensure that all other parts except the parts to be replaced are working properly.

    2. Check redundant paths to the host.

      For details, see Checking the Multipathing Status in the Performance Monitoring Guide.

    3. Check the status of the parts to be replaced.

      Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Parts Replacement > Parts Replacement. On the Parts Replacement page, click FRU Replacement. Then complete the check before the replacement as prompted. For details, see Replacing an FRU.

    You can proceed to next steps only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault as prompted.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Grip the green part of the optical fiber, remove the MPO end of the optical fiber from the optical module, and cover the optical fiber with a dustproof cap, as shown in Figure 6-245.

    Do not look into the optical port without eye protection. The laser beam on the optical interface board or from the fiber may cause injuries to eyes.

  4. Grip the rubber handle outside the optical module, pull the optical module out with even force, and cover it with a dustproof cap, as shown in Figure 6-246.

  5. Put the removed optical module into an ESD bag.
  6. Take a spare optical module out of its ESD bag.
  7. Take the dustproof cap off the optical module, hold the rubber handle outside the transceiver, and insert the transceiver into the port, as shown in Figure 6-247.

    • Push the optical module to the end. If you hear the click or feel a weak vibration, the optical module is successfully installed.
    • If an optical module is installed incorrectly, it will loose or a link interruption may occur.

  8. Take off the dustproof cap. Point the white dot of the optical fiber downward and insert it directly to the optical module. Grip the black connector and push it forward until you hear the click or feel the vibration, as shown in Figure 6-248.

    Do not look into the optical port without eye protection. The laser beam on the optical interface board or from the fiber may cause injuries to eyes.

  9. View the Port indicator, and determine whether the installation is successful.

    • If the indicator is steady green or blue, the optical module is successfully installed.
    • If the indicator is steady red or off, the newly installed optical module is faulty, the slot that houses the transceiver is faulty, or the optical module is incorrectly installed.

  10. Confirm the replacement.

    1. Perform a post-replacement inspection.

      After the parts replacement, return to the SmartKit page and click Replaced. Then complete the parts check after the replacement as prompted.

    2. Check system status.

      On the Parts Replacement page, click Inspection to check the system status again. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions.

    3. After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for any storage-related error.

Follow-up Procedure

After the optical module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
