Replacing a Management Module (for 5600 V5/5800 V5/5600F V5/5800F V5)

Replacing a Management Module (for 5600 V5/5800 V5/5600F V5/5800F V5)

This section describes how to replace a management module.

Impact on the System

During the replacement of a management module, the service processing capability is adversely affected.

  • The spare part of the management module is ready.
  • The management module that you want to replace has been located.

You can locate a component in either of the following ways:

  • Log in to DeviceManager and go to the System page. On the System page, check the device view and locate the position of the component to be replaced. If the component has a location indicator, turn on the indicator. (For details about how to turn on a location indicator, see the online help of DeviceManager.)
  • Use the alarm indicator of the component to locate its position.
  • Services running on the management module that you want to replace have been stopped.
  • The cable connection positions of the management module that you want to replace are labeled on the cables.

  • You can replace one management module at a time. If you remove two management modules at a time, the storage system powers off abnormally.
  • Remove and insert a management module with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the management module.
  • A management module must be replaced within five minutes. Otherwise, the system heat dissipation is compromised.
  • After removing a management module, wait at least fifteen seconds before inserting one.

Tools and Materials

  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Labels

  1. Check status before replacement.

    1. Check system status.

Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check. On the Health Check page, perform inspection as instructed. For details, see Checking System Status.

If some items fail in the inspection, rectify the faults by performing the recommended actions in the inspection reports. Ensure that all other parts except the parts to be replaced are working properly.

    2. Check the status of the parts to be replaced.

Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Parts Replacement > Parts Replacement. On the Parts Replacement page, click FRU Replacement. Then complete the check before the replacement as prompted. For details, see Replacing an FRU.

You can proceed to next steps only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault as prompted.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Remove the cables from the management module that you want to replace.
  4. Press the latch on the inner side of the management module handle and pull out the management module, as shown in Figure 6-198.

  5. Put the removed management module into an ESD bag.
  6. Take the replacement management module out of its ESD bag.
  7. Insert the replacement management module into the empty slot until it clicks into place, as shown in Figure 6-199.

Figure 6-199 Installing a management module

  8. Connect the cables as labeled.
  9. Wait approximately two minutes and check the status of the Power indicator on the management module to determine whether the management module is successfully installed. Figure 6-200 shows the location of the Power indicator.

    • If the indicator is steady green, the management module is successfully installed.
    • If the indicator is steady red or off, the newly installed management module is faulty, the management module slot is faulty, or the management module is incorrectly installed.

  10. Confirm the replacement.

    1. Perform a post-replacement inspection.

After the parts replacement, return to the SmartKit page and click Replaced. Then complete the parts check after the replacement as prompted.

    2. Check system status.

On the Parts Replacement page, click Inspection to check the system status again. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions.

    3. After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for any storage-related error.

Follow-up Procedure

After the management module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
