Using Optical Fibers Safely

Using Optical Fibers Safely

Use optical fibers in a safe and correct manner, to ensure the normal operation of the equipment and to prevent personal injury and equipment damage.

The laser beam on the optical interface board or from the optical fiber may cause injuries to eyes. Do not stare into the optical interface or fiber connector during installation and maintenance of optical interface boards or optical fibers.

Cleaning Optical Fiber Connectors and Optical Interfaces

Use special cleaning tools and materials to clean the optical connectors and optical interfaces. Common tools and materials include:

  • Special cleaning solvent (Isoamylol is preferred, propyl alcohol is the next, and alcohol and formalin are forbidden.)
  • Non-woven lens tissue
  • Special compressed gas
  • Cotton stick (medical cotton or long fiber cotton)
  • Special cleaning roll, used with Isoamylol cleaning solvent
  • Magnifier for optical connectors

Covering Optical Fiber Connectors

Use protective caps to cover the connectors of optical fibers that are not used temporarily.
