Installing a GE Switch

Installing an S5700-52C-SI/S5352C-SI/CE5855-48T4S2Q-EI (the S5752/S5352/CE5855 for short) switch to a cabinet is a process for installing mounting ears, connecting a PGND cable to the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch, sliding the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch into the cabinet, and installing a pluggable optical module.

Prerequisites

  • A switch is 1 U in height. The switch installation positions have been planned according to configuration documents.
  • Guide rails and floating nuts have been installed.
  • All required tools have been prepared, containing Phillips screwdrivers, M4 screws, and M6 screws.

Context

  • On a GE back-end network, the S5752/S5352/CE5855 is responsible for interconnection and communication among nodes and upstream access to the node management and maintenance plane.
  • On other networks, the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch is responsible only for the upstream access to the node management and maintenance plane.

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Insert an optical subcard into the front panel of the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch, as shown in Figure 8-88.

  3. Install a PGND cable.

    After the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch is installed into the cabinet, there is no adequate room left in the cabinet for installing the PGND cable since the ground screw of the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch is on its side. Therefore, it is advisable to install the PGND cable before sliding the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch into the cabinet.

    If the PGND cable is not preinstalled on the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch, install it onsite.

    1. Take out an accompanying PGND cable.
    2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unfasten the M4 screw in the ground terminal of the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch.
    3. Use the Phillips screwdriver to secure one end of the PGND cable to the ground terminal of the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch, as shown in Figure 8-89.

      NOTE:

      When securing the PGND cable to the ground terminal of the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch, ensure that the PGND cable is secured in parallel with the cabinet to prevent the PGND cable from being obstructed.

  4. Use M4 screws to secure mounting ears to both sides of the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch, as shown in 1 of Figure 8-90.
  5. Slide the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch along guide rails into the cabinet.
  6. Use M6 screws to secure the mounting ears to the mounting bars of the cabinet, as shown in 3 of Figure 8-90.

    NOTE:
    • Secure the two screws in the upper and lower parts of a mounting ear if L-shaped guide rails are used.
    • Secure the screw in the upper part of a mounting ear if L-shaped adjustable guide rails are used.

    The following figure takes the L-shaped guide rails as an example.

  7. Verify that the S5752/S5352/CE5855 switch is horizontally installed and firmly secured.
  8. Install an optical module.

    • Wear an ESD wrist strap or gloves to prevent damaging ESD-sensitive optical modules.
    • Do not insert an optical module reversely. If an optical module cannot be completely inserted into an optical module slot, do not force it into the slot. Turn the optical module over and try again.
    • Do not remove dust-proof caps from optical connectors before connecting optical fibers to optical modules.
    • Optical modules and optical fibers support only multi-mode optical modules.

    1. Take out an optical module from an ESD bag and verify that the optical module is intact.
    2. Insert the optical module into an optical port on the subcard until it snaps into place and then raise the handle to lock it up, as shown in Figure 8-91.

      When the locking reed of the optical module makes a "click" sound, the optical module is installed correctly.
