Installing a Signal Cable for an SMS Modem

Installing a Signal Cable for an SMS Modem

A USB port or serial port is used to connect an SMS modem to a storage node to implement remote alarm notification by SMS.

Prerequisites

  • Storage nodes have been installed.
  • Operations described in Installing an SMS Modem have been completed.
  • All required tools have been prepared, containing power cables, USB serial cables, serial cables, and serial transfer cables delivered with a modem.

Procedure

  1. Connect an SMS modem.

    • Use a USB serial cable to connect the SMS modem.
Connect the USB port of the USB serial cable to the USB port on an access node. Then connect the DB9 end of the serial cable to the serial port of the SMS modem.
      NOTE:

The default GPRS working mode is usb. You can run the show gprs work_mode command on the CLI to check the system working mode.

    • Use a serial cable to connect the SMS modem.
      1. Connect the DB9 end of the serial cable to the serial port on the SMS modem.
      2. Connect the RJ45 end of the serial cable to the serial port on the node.

  2. (Optional) If you use a serial cable to connect the SMS modem, you must run the change gprs work_mode serial_port command on the CLI to change the system working mode to serial_port.

Change the GPRS working mode to serial_port.

    admin:/>change gprs work_mode serial_port
    Command executed successfully.

  3. Connect the DC end of the SMS modem's dedicated power adapter to the power port of the SMS modem, and the AC end to an AC power socket.

A P25 node on the 10GE network is used as an example to illustrate how to connect the SMS modem to storage nodes, as shown in Figure 10-70 and Figure 10-71.
