Configuring the 10GE Interface to Work in LAN or WAN Mode


The 10GE Ethernet interface can work in LAN or WAN mode according to its physical attributes:
  • LAN mode: The 10GE interface transmits Ethernet packets and connects to the Ethernet. The maximum transmission rate of a switch XGE interface in LAN mode is 10000 Mbit/s.
  • WAN mode: The 10GE interface transmits synchronous optical network (SONET)/synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) frames and connects to the SONET/SDH network. The upstream device can be a switch or an optical transmission device. Interfaces working in WAN mode transmit packets at the physical layer of SONET/SDH, which provides highly reliable and point-to-point data connections. A switch XGE interface in WAN mode complies with OC-192/STM-64 (9553 Mbit/s), and the transmission rate has a fixed value of 9553 Mbit/s.

As shown in Figure 2-4, 10GE1/0/1 on SwitchA working in WAN mode connects to 10GE1/0/2 on SwitchB over the SONET/SDH network. 10GE1/0/1 working in WAN mode encapsulates Ethernet packets into SONET/SDH frames and transmits them to the SONET/SDH network.

  • Only the 10GE fiber interfaces with 10GE medium on the CE-L48XS-EA, CE-L24XS-EA, CE-L24XS-BA, and CE-L48XS-BA cards can work in WAN mode.
  • You can configure the working mode and the frame format for an interface in both the 10GE optical interface view and the port group view.


  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run interface 10GE interface-number

    The 10GE interface view is displayed.

  3. Run port mode { lan | wan }

    A working mode is configured.

    By default, the 10GE Ethernet interface works in LAN mode.

  4. Run wan frame-format { sdh | sonet }

    The frame format is set.

    By default, the frame format is SDH.

  5. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.
