(Optional) Configuring a Flood Gateway

Context

On the VXLAN network, when an access device used as the source VTEP has multiple remote VTEPs, the vni head-end peer-list command needs to be configured to specify the remote VTEPs. When the source VTEP sends BUM packets in ingress replication mode, it needs to send one copy of the packets to each remote VTEP, causing the packet to be flooded and increasing the network load. A flood gateway can be configured to prevent this problem. After a flood proxy IP address is configured on a VXLAN gateway, the gateway functions as the centralized replicator. When the source VTEP receives BUM packets, it only needs to send one copy of the packets to the centralized replicator. The centralized replicator then sends the packets to each remote VTEP, which reduces flooded traffic on the network.

NOTE:

Only the CE12800E can function as a flood gateway.

To improve the overall performance of a flood gateway, you need to configure the following functions, apart from configuring the centralized replication function on the access device and configuring a flood proxy IP address on the flood gateway:
  • Configure interface-based traffic suppression on the flood gateway to suppress flooded traffic on the entire network. For details, see Configuring Traffic Suppression on an Interface.
  • Configure MAC address flapping detection on the flood gateway to detect loops. For details, see Configuring MAC Address Flapping Detection.

Procedure

  • Configure the centralized replication function on the access device.
    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run interface nve nve-number

      An NVE interface is created, and the NVE interface view is displayed.

    3. Run source ip-address

      An IP address is configured for the source VTEP.

      By default, no IP address is configured for the source VTEP.

    4. Run vni vni-id flood-vtep ip-address &<1-10>

      The centralized replication function is enabled, and the specified IP address is the flood proxy IP address of the centralized replicator.

      By default, the centralized replication function is disabled.

    5. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.

  • Configure a flood proxy IP address for the flood gateway.

    NOTE:

    To improve reliability, the same VTEP IP address and flood proxy IP address can be configured on multiple flood gateways.

    1. Run system-view

      The system view is displayed.

    2. Run interface nve nve-number

      An NVE interface is created, and the NVE interface view is displayed.

    3. Run source ip-address

      An IP address is configured for the source VTEP.

      By default, no IP address is configured for the source VTEP.

    4. Run flood proxy ip-address

      A flood proxy IP address is configured.

      By default, no flood proxy IP address is configured.

      NOTE:
      • Generally, the loopback interface IP address is configured as the flood proxy IP address, and it is different from the VTEP IP address of the NVE interface
      • The flood proxy IP address must be the same as the address specified when you enable the centralized replication function.

    5. Run commit

      The configuration is committed.
