(Optional) Configuring the Multicast Replication Mode for Forwarding BUM Packets

To reduce flooded traffic caused by the use of ingress replication to send BUM packets, configure the multicast replication mode.

Context

When an access device serves as the source VTEP and has multiple remote VTEPs on a VXLAN network, it uses the ingress replication mode to forward BUM packets. It sends a copy of each received BUM packet to each VTEP, causing a packet flood and increasing the network load. To resolve the issue, configure the multicast replication mode to forward BUM packets.

In multicast replication mode, all VTEPs with the same VNI join the same multicast group. A multicast routing protocol, such as PIM, is used to create a multicast forwarding entry for the multicast group. When the source VTEP receives a BUM packet, it adds a multicast destination IP address, such as 225.0.0.1, to the BUM packet before sending the packet to the remote VTEPs based on the created multicast forwarding entry, reducing flooded packets.

NOTE:
  • You cannot configure the multicast replication mode for BUM packets on the CE12800E.

  • The multicast replication mode and centralized replication mode cannot be both configured.

  • After the multicast replication mode is configured, the vni vni-id head-end peer-list command can still be used to generate a remote VTEP address list for establishing VXLAN tunnels. Then the multicast replication mode, not the ingress replication mode, is used to forward BUM packets.

  • When configuring multicast replication mode of intra-subnet BUM traffic, ensure that the multicast replication address specified by mcast-group is different from the requested multicast group address. Otherwise, the receiver may receive VXLAN-encapsulated BUM packets.

  • The multicast replication mode is only supported for IPv4 over IPv4 and IPv6 over IPv4 networks.

Configure the multicast replication mode on all VTEPs.

Pre-configuration Tasks

Before configuring the multicast replication mode, complete the following tasks:

Complete the following task on each node on the VXLAN network:

  • Configure PIM-SM. For configuration details, see Configuring IPv4 PIM-SM.

PIM-SM needs to be enabled on the directly-connected physical interface at the VXLAN tunnel side.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run interface nve nve-number

    The NVE interface view is displayed.

  3. Run vni vni-id mcast-group ip-address

    The multicast replication function for forwarding BUM packets is enabled, and the multicast replication address of a specific VNI is set.

    By default, multicast replication is disabled.

    ip-address specifies the multicast replication address of the current VNI, namely, the address of the multicast group that all VTEPs join.

  4. (Optional) On a network with both M-LAG and VXLAN configured, run the following commands on NVE devices with M-LAG configured to add a VLANIF interface to a multicast group. The M-LAG master and backup devices synchronize VXLAN-encapsulated multicast packets through the peer link.
    1. Run quit

      Exit from the NVE interface view.

    2. Run vlan vlan-id

      The VLAN view is displayed.

    3. Run quit

      Exit from the VLAN view.

    4. Run interface vlanif vlan-id

      The VLANIF interface view is displayed.

    5. Run vxlan multicast-group member enable

      The VLANIF interface is added to a multicast group.

      By default, an interface is not added to a multicast group.

      NOTE:

      You can add only one VLANIF interface to a multicast group. In addition, you are not advised to deploy other services on this VLANIF interface.

    6. Run pim sm

      PIM-SM is enabled.

    7. Run quit

      Exit from the VLANIF interface view.

  5. Run commit

    The configuration is committed.

Verifying the Configuration

After configuring the multicast replication mode for forwarding VXLAN packets, check the configurations.

  • Run the display vxlan tunnel command to check information about VXLAN tunnels, including the VXLAN tunnel whose destination address is a multicast replication address.

  • Run the display vxlan vni vni verbose command to check detailed information about the VXLAN with a specified VNI whose BUM Mode is multicast replication.
