This section provides the points of attention when configuring FCoE.

Involved Network Elements

An FCoE network involves the following network elements (NEs):

  • Server: obtains a high-capacity storage environment from a storage device.

  • FCoE switch: transmits traffic on the FCoE network.

  • Fiber Channel (FC) switch: transmits traffic on the storage area network (SAN).

  • Storage device: provides a high-capacity external storage environment for servers.

Licensing Requirements

  • Licenses control the FCoE forwarder (FCF) and NPort Virtualization (NPV) of switches. By default, a newly purchased switch is not enabled with FCF and NPV. To use FCF and NPV, apply for and purchase the licenses from the equipment supplier.

  • The FCF function is controlled by two types of licenses. The license CE-LIC-FCF-ALL supports FCF configuration on all the interfaces. The license CE-LIC-FCF-PORT supports FCF configuration on a total of 16 interfaces (the interfaces can be on the same card or on different cards). You can load multiple CE-LIC-FCF-PORT licenses to meet capacity expansion requirements.

  • The FIP snooping bridge (FSB) function is a basic feature of switches and is not under license control.

  • If you load the licenses on multiple devices and then set up a stack, the features that are activated for the stack will be a combination of the features activated for the member devices.

  • Configure a stack and then apply for licenses based on the required number of interfaces. If the license CE-LIC-FCF-PORT is loaded before a stack is configured, the number of interfaces where FCF can be configured in the stack cannot exceed the maximum value among the numbers of interfaces where FCF can be configured on each member device in the stack. That is, the number of interfaces where FCF can be configured in a stack is not the summary of the numbers of interfaces where FCF can be configured on each member device.

  • Even if a license is uploaded to only one of these devices, the license is effective for the stack. If the stack splits, the licenses loaded to the devices respectively take effect. In addition, the activated licensed features can still be used on the devices even if these features are not activated using the devices' own license.

  • If the license of Switch1 supports feature A and the license of Switch2 supports feature B, the two switches support features A and B after they set up a stack. If the stack splits, feature B on Switch1 can still run even after Switch1 restarts but new configurations cannot be added to feature B.

  • The device does not support authentication or encryption mechanisms such as the Diffie Hellman - Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (DH-CHAP) or fault-management, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS). To ensure security of the storage network, take measures to ensure device security.

  • For the CE6870EI and CE6875EI: In V100R005C00, FCF and TRILL cannot be used together. In V100R005C10 and later versions, FCF and TRILL cannot be used together by default. To use them both, run the trill adjacency-check disable command first. The TRILL function has a higher priority than the FCoE function. If the FCF function is configured before TRILL, only TRILL takes effect.

  • On the switches excluding the CE6870EI and CE6875EI, FCF/NPV and TRILL cannot be used together.
  • FCoE and VXLAN cannot be used together.

  • For the CE6870EI and CE6875EI:

    If an FCF instance has been configured on the switch, configuring an FSB instance will cause FCF traffic loss.

  • When FCoE is used, dual-homing networking is recommended. In single-homing networking where both the FCF and FSB are used, when the FCoE-enabled device connects to certain network adapters, the link recovery period is long.

  • On the switches excluding the CE6870EI and CE6875EI, in a super virtual fabric (SVF) system where the interface for transmitting FCoE traffic needs to be specified, if an FCoE interface is bound to an Eth-Trunk, you only need to configure FCoE on any Eth-Trunk member interface.

  • In V100R006C00 and later versions, an SVF system supports FCoE. When a CE6810LI or a CE5800 switch functions as a leaf switch in an SVF system, the SVF system does not support FCoE.

  • When the FCoE-enabled device connects to a QLogic network adapter, the QLogic network adapter that does not receive responses retransmits FLOGI requests every 20s. After a given time, the FCoE-enabled device enters the VLAN Request state. The link recovery period may be as long as 3 minutes.

  • When the FCoE-enabled device connects to a Brocade 1020 network adapter, configure independent enhanced transmission selection (ETS) priority groups for FCoE and Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) services and enable Priority-based Flow Control (PFC) for queues with priorities. Otherwise, Data Center Bridging eXchange protocol (DCBX) negotiation fails.

  • A Cisco Nexus 5000 that functions as the FCoE NPort Virtualization (NPV) device cannot connect to FCFs from other vendors.

  • In the same NPV instance, the interfaces between NPV and FCF are either FC or FCoE interfaces.

  • An FCoE VLAN is used only to forward FCoE traffic and FIP packets.

  • The peer-link interfaces of the Multichassis Link Aggregation Group (M-LAG) must be removed from the FCoE VLAN.

  • In V100R005C10 and later versions, the M-LAG function is not available if FSB and FCF, or FSB and NPV are configured together on the device.

  • The CE6870EI and CE6875EI devices do not support outbound traffic statistics collection on an FCoE interface.

  • FCoE configuration depends on successful DCB negotiation.

  • The PFC priorities of member interfaces must be the same in the same instance.

  • In V100R005C10 and later versions, when the FC interface becomes Down and the network adapter does not connect to the network again within 3s, the FC interface address and entry associated with the WWN address still exist on the device. Run the shutdown command to shut down the interface. After the interface is shut down, such a problem does not occur.

  • On the CE7855EI, CE7850EI, CE6860EI, CE6850HI, CE6850U-HI, CE6855HI, CE6856HI, and CE6851HI, if both FSB and NPV instances are deployed, the destination FC_ID configured by the fcoe routing command must be different from the FC_ID of the NPV instance. Otherwise, the NPV function becomes unavailable.

  • The traffic statistics on an FC interface do not contain the inter-frame gap and preamble.

  • The maximum rate supported by a 16GE FC optical interface is 14 Gbit/s.

  • An 8G FC optical interface supports the transmission distance of 4 km.

  • When the NPV connects to the FCF through the FC optical interface, link aggregation cannot be performed on multiple FC optical interfaces.
