FC Working Mechanism

A fabric composed of FC switches provides data transmission. This section describes the FC SAN communication process in a scenario where a server accesses a storage device, as shown in Figure 2-6.

  1. The server device Server and storage device Array connect to the fabric, request the FC switch to provide services, and send Fabric Login (FLLOGI) packets to the FC switch for registration.

  2. The FC switch allocates FC addresses to the server and storage device.

  3. The server and storage device send name service registration requests to the FC switch. The FC switch creates and maintains the mapping between FC addresses and WWNs.

  4. The server sends a Port Login (PLOGIN) message to the destination node to request for session setup.

  5. After the server and storage device set up a session through PLOGI, they can exchange FC data. The FC switch searches for transmission paths for FC data based on FC addresses of the source and destination nodes.
