Application Scenarios of the DHCP Relay Agent

Figure 3-13 shows the typical networking of the DHCP relay.

The earlier DHCP protocol applies only to the scenario that the DHCP client and DHCP server are on the same network segment. To dynamically assign IP addresses to clients on different network segments, the network administrator needs to configure a DHCP server on each network segment, which increases costs.

The DHCP relay function is introduced to solve this issue. A DHCP client can obtain a valid IP address from a DHCP server on another network segment through a DHCP relay agent. In this manner, DHCP clients on multiple network segments can share one DHCP server. This reduces costs and facilitates centralized management.
