Concepts

  • Vehicle surveillance is mainly applied in two scenarios: traffic surveillance and road surveillance. Traffic surveillance focuses on traffic violation detection and recognition, while road surveillance focuses on vehicle and license plate detection and recognition. Traffic surveillance cameras are applicable to traffic surveillance scenarios. Micro checkpoint cameras are applicable to road surveillance scenarios. This document describes the installation requirements, typical application scenarios, service configuration, and common issues and troubleshooting methods of micro checkpoint cameras.
  • Micro checkpoint cameras are generally installed above roads with 1–4 lanes or at intersections and provide live video surveillance as well as license plate capture and recognition functions. Micro checkpoint cameras can be used for video surveillance as well as license plate capture and recognition.
  • The process for a micro checkpoint camera to implement license plate capture and recognition is divided into three steps: vehicle detection, vehicle tracking, and license plate recognition. Vehicle detection, vehicle tracking, and license plate recognition all adopt the deep learning algorithm with the advantage of sustainable learning. Figure 1-1 shows the work principle.

Principle Introduction

Vehicle detection

The camera splits and classifies images, obtains moving objects, including pedestrians, non-motor vehicles, and motor vehicles, and further identifies the motor vehicles through the deep learning algorithm.

Vehicle tracking

A lot of issues may occur when a vehicle is moving, for example, changing the lane or being blocked by other objects. In this case, the camera automatically switches the tracking mode to implement intelligent tracking and accurately track vehicles to take snapshots.

License plate recognition

The camera selects the optimal image from the captured vehicle images, locates the license plate in the image, splits the license plate characters, and matches the letters, digits, and other types of characters separately to obtain an accurate license plate.

  • IPC6000 series cameras and M series micro checkpoint cameras of IPC V500R019C00 and IPC V500R019C10 support recognition of license plates only from the Chinese mainland.
  • To enable M2121-EVL (2.8-12 mm) and M2121-EVL (8-32 mm) of SDC V500R019C60 to recognize license plates from Indonesia, you need to load the required algorithm package by referring to Algorithm Management with no need to load the license. Other M series micro checkpoint cameras support recognition of license plates only from the Chinese mainland.
  • By default, X series micro checkpoint cameras support recognition of license plates from the Chinese mainland. The X series cameras can also recognize license plates from Hong Kong (China), Macao (China), and Taiwan (China), and some countries/regions outside China after related license plate recognition algorithms are loaded and license files are imported.   • Visit the Huawei enterprise technical support website and enter the camera model to search for and obtain the latest software installation package.
