Updating the VM

Scenario

This section describes how to update the student's VM using a template. Related operations include adding software to, modifying software in, and deleting software from the student's VM.

Prerequisites

  • You have obtained the URL, username, and password for logging in to FusionCompute.
  • You have obtained the software package to be installed.
  • You have obtained image tool FusionAccess_Windows_Installer_V100R006C20SPC102.iso.

Procedure

Cloning the template

  1. On FusionCompute, choose VM and Template > Template.
  2. Locate the row that contains the template to be cloned and choose More > Clone to Template.

    The Create Template page is displayed.

  1. Clone the template as prompted.

    Select the computing resource:

    Linked clone: The default value ManagementCluster is recommended.

    Retain the default values for other parameters.

  1. Clone the template as prompted.

    Select the computing resource:

    Full memory: Select a cluster or host whose storage type is IOTailor.

    Retain the default values for other parameters.

Converting the template into a VM

  1. On FusionCompute, choose VM and Template > Template.
  2. Locate the row that contains the target VM, and choose More > Convert to VM to convert the template into a VM as prompted.

    VMs that are converted successfully will be displayed on the VM page.

  3. Locate the row that contains the VM, and click Power on to power on the VM as prompted.

Using the template tool to configure the VM OS

  1. Mount FusionAccess_Windows_Installer_V100R006C20SPC102.iso to the VM.
  2. In the CD/DVD-ROM directory of the VM, double-click run.bat.

    The FusionAccess Windows Installer window is displayed.

  1. Update the VM template as prompted.

Installing software

  1. Locate the row that contains the VM, and click Log In Using VNC.
  2. Check whether the software package is an ISO file.

  3. Mount the ISO file to the VM.
  4. On the VM, double-click the CD/DVD-ROM.

    On the CD/DVD-ROM drive window that is displayed, you can see the software package. Go to Step 20.

  1. On the VM desktop displayed in the VNC login window, set the IP address of the PC or laptop to an IP address that is in the same segment as the IP address of the management plane.
  2. Choose Start > Run.
  3. In Open, enter \\IP address of the PC or laptop\Drive letter of the drive that contains the software package$ and click OK.

    The Windows Security dialog box is displayed.

  1. Enter the username and password for logging in to the PC or laptop and click OK.

    Go to the task manager of the PC or laptop.

  1. Copy the software installation programs to the C:\ directory on the VM.
  2. Double-click each software installation program and install software as prompted.

    NOTE:

    Copy the software package from the mounted CD/DVD-ROM drive. After the software is installed, you must unmount the CD/DVD-ROM drive from the VM.

Converting the VM into a template

  1. On FusionCompute, choose VM and Template > VM
  2. Locate the row that contains the target VM, choose More > Shut Down, and click OK twice.
  3. When the VM is in the Stopped state, choose More > Convert to Template.

    A prompt box is displayed.

  4. Click OK.

Configuring the template

  1. On FusionAccess, click Desktop. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Service Configuration > VM Template.
  2. In the right pane, set the template type of the VM to be provisioned and click OK.
  3. Check whether the template type is linked clone.

Enabling the iCache function

  1. On FusionCompute, choose VM and Template > Template.
  2. Locate the row that contains the new template, and choose More > Configure iCache.

    The Configure iCache page is displayed.

  3. In the host list, select a host that can provide memory resources for the iCache function and click OK.

    You can view the iCache configuration progress on the Task Center page.

Using the template to update VM group

  1. On the FusionAccess portal, choose Desktop > VM Group.

    The page for managing VM groups is displayed.

  2. Enter the search criteria about the VM group to be updated and click Query.
  3. In the query list, select the to-be-updated VM group and click Recompose System Disk.
  1. In the Set Update Policy window that is displayed, set the update policy and notification message as prompted.

    • If the VMs in the VM group are in use or have important data to save later, select Next startup (Not now).
    • If the VMs in the VM group are not in use or no import data needs to be saved, select Immediately (Forced update).
      NOTE:

      During the update, all the full memory VMs created by using the template, rather than only the selected full memory VMs in a VM group, are updated.

  1. Click OK.
  2. In the Update VM group software window that is displayed, choose the updated VM template, and click Finish.
