Starting the Oracle Database and Listener

Use the SQLPlus to view the database status, start the Oracle database and listener.

Prerequisites

Please ensure that the database instance and the listener have created.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the Oracle database server as the oracle user.
  2. Start the database.

    1. Connect to the database.

      > sqlplus / as sysdba

      The Oracle server connects to the database if the following information is displayed:

      SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.4.0 Production on Wed Dec 24 16:05:14 2014 
       
      Copyright (c) 1982, 2013, Oracle.  All rights reserved. 
       
       
      Connected to: 
      Oracle Database 11g Release 11.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production     
    2. View the database status.

      SQL> select INSTANCE_NAME, STATUS from v$instance;

      The database is started if the following information is displayed:

      INSTANCE_NAME                      STATUS  
      -------------------------------- ------------------------  
      esight                                      OPEN      
    3. If the database is closed and you cannot access the database, run the following command to start the database.

      SQL> startup

      The database is started when the following information is displayed:

      ORACLE instance started. 
       
      Total System Global Area 8250933248 bytes 
      Fixed Size                  2244752 bytes 
      Variable Size            4227862384 bytes 
      Database Buffers         4009754624 bytes 
      Redo Buffers               11071488 bytes 
      Database mounted. 
      Database opened.
    4. Quit the SQL command line.

      SQL> exit

  3. Start the listener.

    1. Check the listener status.

      > lsnrctl status ESIGHTLISTENER

      The listener is started if the following information is displayed:

    2. If the listener is not started, run the following command to start the listener.
