How Do I Change the Password of an Oracle Database User

How Do I Change the Password of an Oracle Database User

Question

I do not know how to change the password of an Oracle database user.

When eSight is installed, use the maintenance tool to change the database password. Otherwise, some problems may occur on eSight. For details, see What Can I Do If the Password of the Oracle Database User Failed to Be Changed with the Maintenance Tool.

Answer

NOTE:

This operation is applicable only to the single-node system scenario.

  1. Log in to the SUSE Linux as user oracle.
  2. On the command line interface (CLI), run the following command to connect to the Oracle database:

    $ sqlplus / as sysdba

    NOTE:

    The user name and password are required in remote login mode. The following describes how to use the command to connect the system user to the Oracle database with password testpwd.

    $ sqlplus system/testpwd as sysdba

    If the information similar to the following is displayed, the system user is connected to the Oracle database:

    SQL >

  3. Run the following command to change the password of the database user system:

    > alter user system identified by testpwd;

    The method of changing other Oracle user passwords is the same as the method of changing the password of the database user system. To be specific, system is the database user name to be changed, and testpwd is the password of the user-defined system user.

    If the return value is User altered, the password is successfully changed. Otherwise, locate the cause as prompted.
