License Management

License Management

A license file controls resources and functions of the eSight. You can check the license validity to ensure proper running of the eSight.

Resource and Function Control Items

The eSight licenses provide resource and function control items, as listed in Table 2-1. If you want to use the resource and function control items of the following licenses, you must apply for and import the licenses.

NOTE:
  • By default, the eSight sets important alarm thresholds for resource control items to ensure that the eSight can connect license resources. When detecting that the license usage reaches or exceeds the thresholds (the default threshold is 80%), the eSight reports The license resource overs the threshold alarm to notify users. When the usage of license resource items reaches the upper limit, license resources canot be connected.
  • If you want to uninstall the eSight, back up the license.dat file in eSight installation directory/AppBase/etc/license. If you want to reinstall the eSight, re-import the backup license. That is, you do not need to apply for the license again.

License State

During routine O&M, you can regularly query the validity period and resource usage of a license to ensure proper running of the eSight. The eSight licenses supports four states: valid, trial, expired, and invalid. Learn the usage of licenses in various states in the following GUIs:
  • Valid: View the usage on the license management page.
  • Expired and invalid: View the usage on the license interceptor page.
  • Trial: View the usage on the license interceptor or license management page.
    • No limit is imposed on the validity of an eSight commercial license. That is, it will not expire. However, a non-commercial license (for example, a temporary license or a commissioning license) has an expiration date. After the license expires, you need to apply for and load a commercial license.
    • Impact of license expiration:
      • After the license expires, there is a 60-day protection period during which services are not affected. When you log in to eSight, the system prompts you to update the license. An alarm will be displayed 15 days before the end of the protection period, informing you that the license is to expire. After the protection period ends, an alarm indicating that the license has expired will be displayed.
      • After the 60-day protection period, you cannot log in to eSight and the northbound functions (including SNMP northbound, FTP northbound, and OpenAPI northbound interfaces) are unavailable. Functions that are not affected include device alarm reporting, performance data collection, AAA authentication, and message notification.

License Revoke

Before revoking a license, you must know that:
  • An expired license or a license in trial state cannot be revoked.
  • The license obtained by using the revocation code and ESN has the same resource items and function items as the invalid license.
  • This operation cannot be rolled back. After a license is revoked, the license will expire in 60 days.

License Operations

NOTE:

For a high availability (HA) system, you need to obtain the ESNs of the primary and secondary servers and separate them with a comma (,) to obtain a license for the HA system.

Table 2-2 lists license operations.

Description

Prerequisite

Navigation Path

Obtaining an ESN

The eSight uses the character string generated after the MAC address is encrypted and converted as the unique ESN.

  • You have the Update License operation rights.
  • You have obtained the message authentication code (MAC) address of the eSight server.

The navigation paths to obtaining ESNs vary with license states.

  • If a license is in the validity period or trial state: Choose System > System Management > License Management from the main menu. On the License Management page, click Obtain ESN.
    • Obtaining the physical machine ESN: The current default tab page is the Physical Environment tab page.
    • Obtaining the virtual machine ESN: Click the Virtual Machine tab.
  • If a license is in the trial, expired, or invalid state: The license interceptor page is displayed after login. On the displayed page, click here next to If no license file is available to obtain the ESNs of both the physical machine and virtual machine.

Obtain ESNs using either of the following methods:

  • By selecting a MAC address: You can use this method to obtain the ESN of the current logged-in server only.
NOTE:

The drop-down list shows the MAC addresses of the network adapters of the current server. If the server has multiple network adapters, select any MAC address. If the network adapter that provides the selected MAC address is faulty, the license may be invalid.

  • By entering a MAC address: This method is used to obtain the ESN of another server or the current server.

Applying for the license

After an initial installation, eSight provides a 90-day trial license. You need to apply for a commercial license after the trial period expires.

For details, see the eSight License User Guide.

Apply for a commercial license on ESDP (http://app.huawei.com/isdp). For details, see the eSight License User Guide.

Importing a License File

After you have applied for a license, import the license to the eSight for the license to take effect.

  • The imported license takes effect immediately with restarting the eSight in the following scenarios: The imported license does not include functional module changes and includes only resource item quantity changes. Or, the license corresponding to a functional module is added or deleted but the corresponding functional module is not installed on the eSight.
  • If the imported license includes functional module changes (that is, the license corresponding to a functional module has been added or deleted and the function module has been installed on the eSight), select an operation in the window that is displayed.
    • If Yes is clicked, the eSight automatically restarts in one minute. The imported license takes effect after the eSight restarts. Functional modules without licenses are not started.
    • If No is clicked, the eSight does not restart and the license import operation is canceled. The existing license is still used.
NOTE:

If the application manager is installed on the eSight and the imported license includes eSight APP Management License (Instance) whose value is greater than 500, it is recommended that the eSight be restarted to improve the performance of the application manager.

  • You have the operation rights for Update License.
  • A new license is obtained.

The navigation paths to importing licenses vary with license states.

  • If a license is in the validity period or trial state: Choose System > System Management > License Management from the main menu. On the License Management page, click Import License.
  • If a license is in the trial, expired, or invalid state: The license interceptor page is displayed after login. On the displayed page, click here next to If a license file is available.

After a license is imported successfully, log in to the eSight as a user with the administrator rights. Choose System > System Management > License Management from the main menu. On the license management page, the basic license information, resource control information, and function control information is consistent with that of the newly loaded license, and the license revocation code is empty.

Revoking a License

If a network adapter is faulty or needs to be replaced by a new, revoke the current license to generate a revocation code. The code is used to obtain a new license file for free.

  • You have the operation rights for Revoke License.

Choose System > System Management > License Management from the main menu. On the License Management page, click Revoke License.

Contact Huawei technical support engineers to apply for a new license using the license revocation code and the ESN.

Query the validity period of the software service annual fee.

When the software service annual fee is about to expire, you need to contact the administrator to apply for a new license and import the new license into eSight promptly.

NOTE:

If the software annual fee has expired, eSight cannot be upgraded to the next R version, and the software subscription and services are unavailable.

Log in to eSight.

Choose System > System Management > License Management from the main menu and view Software Upgrade Expired On in License Information.
