Operation Procedure

Operation Procedure

This section describes how to manage device software versions on eSight, helping you quickly master device software management operations.

Table 12-33 Operation procedure of device software management

Step

Operation

Description

1

Set protocol parameters on the device: SNMP, Telnet, and NetConf

  • If SNMP is used, the MIB view including ISO nodes must be configured. SNMPv2c read and write permissions are mandatory.

For details about how to configure the SNMP protocol on the device, see Configuring the SNMP Protocol on Devices.

  • The Telnet privilege mode on eSight must be the same as that on the device.

For details about how to set Telnet parameters on the device, see Setting Telnet Parameters on Devices.

2

Add devices to eSight.

Select a proper device addition mode based on the site requirements.

For details about how to add devices to eSight, see Adding Devices to eSight.

3

Check the FTP server status.

If SFTP is used to manage device software, run the following command on the device to enable first-time authentication on the SSH client:

ssh client first-time enable

For details about how to check the status of the FTP server, see Checking the FTP Server Status.

4

Obtain and upload device files.

For details about device specifications, see Specification List.

5

Upgrade the device's software version.

eSight can upgrade device software and install patches on devices in batches.

Upgrade the device's signature database.

eSight supports batch upgrade of device signature databases.

Obtaining and Uploading Device Files

Obtain software versions, license files, patches, and signature database files of the device in advance and upload them to eSight. You can visit http://sec.huawei.com/sec/web/freesignature.do to obtain signature database files.

  1. Choose Resource > Network > Configuration > Device Software Management from the main menu.

  2. Choose File Management from the navigation tree on the left and upload files.

Upgrading the Device Software Version

  1. Choose Resource > Network > Configuration > Device Software Management from the main menu.

  2. In the navigation tree on the left, choose Version Upgrade Management > Task Management and click to create an upgrade task.

By default, Reboot Strategy is set to Manual. After loading the version file during upgrade, a device does not restart automatically. As a result, the upgrade task is suspended. You need to manually restart the device to complete the upgrade task.

  3. Add a device to be upgraded.
  4. Associate target version files for device upgrade.

For CE switches, the ISSU upgrade and Fast stack upgrade modes are supported. Compared with traditional upgrade requiring device restart, upgrade in the ISSU upgrade or Fast stack upgrade mode has shorter service interruption duration. In addition, the service interruption duration for the ISSU upgrade mode is shorter than that for the Fast stack upgrade mode.

    • If the onsite device configuration and connection supports the ISSU upgrade mode, it is recommended that this mode be used. If the ISSU upgrade mode is not used, the service interruption duration is long, affecting services.
    • If the device configuration and connection in the stack scenario supports the ISSU upgrade mode, it is recommended that this mode be used. The Fast stack upgrade mode can also be used. If both ISSU upgrade and Fast stack upgrade modes are not used, the service interruption duration is long, affecting services.

Upgrading the Device Signature Database

  1. Choose Resource > Network > Configuration > Device Software Management from the main menu.

  2. In the navigation tree on the left, choose Signature Database Upgrade Management > Task Management and click to upgrade the device's signature database by task wizard.
