Functions and Application Scenarios

QoS is used to evaluate service providers' capability in meeting customer requirements. Service providers can use the QoS management function to control network service quality, manage and avoid network congestion, reduce the packet loss rate, and provide different services such as voice, video, and data at different QoS.


  • Avoids or manages network congestion.
  • Reduces the packet loss rate.
  • Controls the network traffic.
  • Provides a specific user or service with a dedicated bandwidth.

Application Scenarios

s shown in Figure 12-57, a router is deployed at the egress of an enterprise network and is connected to a WAN. Due to limited link bandwidth, WAN provides differentiated services such as reducing voice packet jitter and delay and ensuring enough bandwidth for important services. When different service traffics from the enterprise internal LAN enter the router, they are classified and managed first. Then packets are sent through WAN interfaces to the WAN downstream devices according to priorities determined by a queuing mechanism. Through QoS management, you can monitor interface traffics and adjust QoS policies accordingly to improve network service quality.
