Server Device Management Introduction

eSight supports centralized management of Huawei and third-party servers. After adding servers to eSight, administrators can view server health status, alarms, performance, and topologies.

Definition

eSight supports centralized management of Huawei and third-party servers. After adding servers to eSight, administrators can view server health status, alarms, performance, and topologies.

  • Huawei servers

    eSight manages Huawei servers through SNMP, IPMI, and Redfish. Huawei servers that can be managed by eSight include rack, blade, high-density, KunLun and heterogeneous servers.

  • Third-party servers

    eSight manages third-party servers through SNMP and IPMI. Third-party servers that can be managed by eSight include HP, DELL, Inspur, SUN and IBM servers.

Function

Servers can connect to eSight for monitoring.

Server Connection

Servers can connect to eSight based on parameters such as server IP addresses in three modes: single adding, automatic discovery, and batch import.

Server Monitoring
  • eSight allows administrators to view basic information and hardware health status of servers. The hardware includes hard disks, CPUs, DIMMs, power supply units (PSUs), fan modules, mainboards, RAID controller cards, and network interface cards (NICs).
  • eSight allows administrators to switch to server management pages remotely.

Server Polling Requirements
  • Huawei server
    • eSight periodically monitors server online status using the ping command or SNMP protocol. The default interval is 5 minutes.
    • When servers are connected to eSight, by default, the polling period is 24 hours, and polling is disabled.
  • Third-party server
    • eSight periodically monitors server online status using the ping command or SNMP protocol. The default interval is 5 minutes.
    • eSight periodically synchronizes component status information on servers to obtain server health status and presence status. The default interval is 60 minutes.

Application Restrictions

Restrictions on Servers

Application restrictions on server management are as follows:

  • Due to the evolution of server software versions, alarms are added based on software versions. New alarms cannot be managed by eSight. For details about alarms that can be managed by eSight, see the Alarms List.
  • Parameters set on eSight must be the same as those on the servers. Otherwise, the servers cannot be connected to eSight.
  • To enable a user to log in to a server without entering the user name and password, ensure that the IP address used by the client for accessing eSight can access the server.
  • eSight has not adapted to Dell and HP servers based on the specific models. When these servers connect to eSight through the SNMP protocol, the IPMI functions are not supported.
  • To view some information about NICs and hard disks, information about some models of RAID controller cards, and hard disk SMART information, you need to install the iBMA software. For details about the installation, see "Installing and Uninstalling iBMA" in the iBMA User Guide.
  • When a server is connected to eSight, the device model is distinguished based on the unique product ID and device model fields. Generally, the two fields exist before device delivery. Users do not need to pay attention to them. If the unique ID and device model of a device are changed due to special customization, the device may fail to connect to eSight. In this case, contact Huawei engineers.
  • When a blade server is connected to eSight, the restrictions are as follows:
    • The Trap mode of the server must be set to OID or Precise Alarm. Otherwise, the server alarms cannot be reported to eSight.
    • The floating IP address of the SMM must be used. Otherwise, the server cannot be connected.
    • Ensure that the values of EngineID of all switch modules on the server are different. Otherwise, the switch modules may fail to be added due to the EngineID conflict.

      For details about how to change the EngineID of the switch module, see the product manual of the switch module.

    • Ensure that the blade to be connected has the mainboard SN and product SN. Otherwise, eSight cannot manage the blade and will report an alarm.
Restrictions on Server Services

Application restrictions on server services are as follows:

  • If SNMPv1 or SNMPv2c is used to connect a server, some features of the server to be connected will be unavailable, including configuration deployment, firmware upgrade, and stateless computing.
  • The following impacts will be exerted on the server management function of eSight when a server is connected to eSight with the authentication password containing special characters including ; | & > < [ ] ( ) ` { } ~
    • The OS, BIOS, RAID, HBA, and CNA templates provided by the server configuration and deployment function are unavailable.
    • The CNA, HBA, RAID, SSD, HDD, NIC, IB, and NVDIMM of the server cannot be upgraded.
    • All the stateless computing services of the server are unavailable.
  • When the eSight server is configured with an IPv6 address, the restrictions are as follows:
    • Only V3 and V5 rack servers support IPv6 addresses.
    • The automatic download feature of the firmware upgrade module does not support automatic download of firmware upgrade packages from the support website.
    • The DHCP service cannot be configured.
    • Multiple subnets cannot be configured on eSight.
    • The IPv6 address is not supported when SSDP automatic discovery is configured.

Key Parameters

Key counters for server device management are as follows:

  • When deployed on a standard-configuration server, eSight can manage a maximum of 2500 server devices.
  • When deployed on a high-configuration server, eSight can manage a maximum of 10000 server devices.
NOTE:
  • Standard-configuration server: 12-core 2 GHz CPU, 32 GB memory, and 500 GB hard disk.
  • High-configuration server: 40-core 2 GHz CPU, 64 GB memory, and 1 TB hard disk.
