Working Principles of Log Forwarding

Working Principles of Log Forwarding

Before you perform log forwarding operations, learning the working principles of eSight log forwarding can help you to better understand log forwarding operations, and perform these operations easily and unerringly.

The log forwarding service of the eSight converts logs into Syslog packets and sends the packets to a third-party Syslog server. During this process, the protocol defined in RFC3164 (UDP), RFC6587 (TCP), or RFC5424 (TLS) is used.

Figure 1 shows the position of the log forwarding service in the log forwarding system.
Figure 24-2 Position of the log forwarding service in the log forwarding system
When TCP or TLS is used to forward logs to a Syslog server, the following situations may occur:
  1. If the eSight successfully connects to the active Syslog server, logs are forwarded only to the active Syslog server.
  2. If the eSight fails to connect to the active Syslog server, the log forwarding service attempts to connect to the standby Syslog server. After the connection is successfully established, logs are forwarded only to the standby Syslog server.
  3. If the eSight fails to connect to the active and standby Syslog servers, the log forwarding service attempts to connect to the active and standby Syslog servers periodically.
