Cabling Rules

This section describes how to plan and use ports on switches during installation and deployment of FusionStorage.

Figure 4-21 shows the IB networking in separate deployment mode.
NOTE:
If two storage switches are used, they must be connected using IB high-speed cables. It is recommended that the number of IB cables between two IB switches be eight.

This section takes ten storage nodes, four compute nodes, and 36-port SX6036 switches as an example to illustrate the physical networking rules of the nodes.
NOTE:

The port planning for 100Gb IB SB7800 switches is the same as that for 56Gb IB SX6036 switches.

Figure 4-22 shows an example of planning ports on a 36-port SX6036 switch.

  • Storage and compute ports

    Each SX6036 switch uses fourteen IB ports to sequentially connect to each node.

    Port connections for storage nodes
    • Switch SX6036-1 connects to port SLOT4-0 on each node.
    • Switch SX6036-2 connects to port SLOT4-1 on each node.
    Port connections for compute nodes
    • Switch SX6036-1 connects to port SLOT4-0 on each node.
    • Switch SX6036-2 connects to port SLOT4-1 on each node.
  • Switch interconnection ports

    Because a total of 14 compute and storage nodes are to be connected, 8 IB ports are recommended for switch interconnection.

  • MGT ports

    Used to manage switches. One MGT port on each SX6036 switch is connected to a CE5800 switch.

  • Reserved ports

    To prevent an adverse impact on other ports, you are advised to run the shutdown command to disable the reserved ports. For details about the shutdown command, refer to related switch documentation.

Figure 4-23 shows an example of planning ports on a CE5800 switch.

  • Mgmt downstream ports

    The CE5800 switch connects to the Mgmt ports of each node through 14 Ethernet ports.

  • NIC1 ports

    Each CE5800 switch connects to the NIC1 port of each node through 14 Ethernet ports.

  • Switch management ports

    MGT ports connected to two SX6036 switches. The ports are used to remotely maintain SX6036 switches.

  • Upstream aggregation ports

    Each CE5800 switch connects to upstream aggregation switches through two Ethernet ports.

  • Reserved ports

    To prevent an adverse impact on other ports, you are advised to run the shutdown command to disable the reserved ports. For details about the shutdown command, refer to related switch documentation.
