Requirements for Virtualization Environment

Table 3-6 shows the requirements for the VMware virtualization environment.

VMware vSphere environment requirements
  • VMware vSphere ESXi is installed on all virtualized hosts.
  • The OS time on each host must be the same as the local time.
  • The vCenter has been installed.
Network
The following figure shows network planes in the system with VMware vSphere connected.

  • FSM nodes communicate with CVMs and storage nodes (deployed in separated mode) on the management plane.
  • The iSCSI initiator module on an ESXi host and the Virtual Block System (VBS) process communicate on the iSCSI plane. The VBS process and Object Storage Device (OSD) process communicate on the storage plane.
  • Each ESXi server has a VM port group which is used for the management plane by default.
  • Create two VM port groups. One is used for the storage plane, and the other is used for the iSCSI plane. Isolate the two planes using VLANs.
  • Create a VMkernel port on each ESXi server.
    • The network is used for the communication between the iSCSI initiator module in the ESXi server and the VBS process in the CVM (the iSCSI target).
    • The VLAN used by the VMkernel port is same to the VLAN used by the VM port group to manage the iSCSI plane.
  • The management plane bandwidth must be greater than 1 Gbit/s.
  • The requirements for the storage plane bandwidth are as follows:
    • If VBS and OSD are separately deployed, the default bandwidth must be greater than 1 Gbit/s. If higher bandwidth is required, estimate the bandwidth based on the actual service requirements.
    • If VBS and OSD are deployed on the same node, the default bandwidth must be greater than 6 Gbit/s. If higher bandwidth is required, estimate the bandwidth based on the actual service requirements.
  • The iSCSI plane requires the same bandwidth as the storage plane.
  • The NIC teaming policy on each ESXi server is as follows: In a standard scenario, set the VM port groups and VMkernel port based on the figure below.

    Set parameters of the virtual switch as shown in Figure 3-2.

Table 3-7 shows the requirements for the Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization environment.
