Transferring a File Using WinSCP

Scenarios

Transfer a file to a Linux operating system using WinSCP.

NOTE:

Ensure that the user have write permission on the folds. If you do not have write permission, for details, see Logging In to a Server Using PuTTY Through a Network Port and run the chmod 777 target folder name command.

For example, if the target file have 640 permission only and the logon account is not the file owner, please assign read and write permission on the /images/yuntian folder to all users, run chmod 777 /images/yuntian.

After finished it, get back to normal permission on the /images/yuntian folder to all users, for example, run chmod 640 /images/yuntian.

Prerequisites

Conditions

  • Communication is normal between the PC and the destination device.
  • Ensure that the user has write permission on the folds.

Table 9-5 lists the data required for performing this operation.

Procedure

    NOTE:
    WinSCP 5.1.2 is used as an example.

    1. Open the WinSCP folder, and double-click WinSCP.exe.

      The WinSCP Login dialog box is displayed, as shown in Figure 9-4.

      NOTE:

      If the operating system (OS) language is not English, click Languages to set the required system language.

    2. Set the following login parameters:

      • File protocol: Select the default value SFTP.
      • Host name: Enter the IP address of the destination device.
      • Port number: Set it to the default value 22.
      • User name: Enter the username.
      • Password: Enter the password.
      • Private key file: Retain the default setting, which is empty.

    3. Click Login.

      The WinSCP file transfer window is displayed.

      NOTE:
      • If the key file is not selected during the first login, the system displays "Continue connecting and add host key to cache", asking you whether to continue the operation. Click Yes. The WinSCP file transfer window is displayed.
      • By default, the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents directory of the local PC is displayed in the left pane, and the /root directory of the transfer destination device is displayed in the right pane.

    4. Determine whether to copy a file from the local PC to the destination device.

      • If yes, go to 5.
      • If no, go to 9.

    5. In the right pane, select a destination directory for storing the received file, such as /home.
    6. In the left pane, select the directory in which the file to be transferred is saved, for example, E:\Software\configuration tool, and choose the file to be transferred.
    7. On the menu bar, choose Files > Copy.

      The Copy dialog box is displayed.

    8. Confirm the file to be transferred and the destination directory for storing the file, and click Copy.

      The file transfer from the local PC to the destination device starts.

    9. In the left pane, select the directory in which the file to be transferred is saved, for example, E:\Software\configuration tool.
    10. In the right pane, select a destination directory for storing the received file, for example, /home, and choose the file to be transferred.
    11. On the menu bar, choose Files > Copy.

      The Copy dialog box is displayed.

    12. Confirm the file to be transferred and the local directory in which the file is saved, and click Copy.

      The file transfer from the destination device to the local PC starts.
