Description

The ARP_FAIL alarm indicates that an Ethernet port fails to learn the MAC address of the remote end using the ARP.

Parameters

When you view an alarm on the network management system, select the alarm. In the Alarm Details field display the related parameters of the alarm. The alarm parameters are in the following format: Alarm Parameters (hex): parameter1 parameter2...parameterN. For details about each parameter, refer to the following table.

Parameters 1 and 2

Indicate the VLAN ID of a VLAN subinterface. The parameters take the fixed value of 0xFFFF for a non-VLAN sub-interface.

Parameters 3-6

Indicate the next-hop IP address.

Impact on the System

When this alarm occurs, services on the interface that reports the alarm are interrupted.

Possible Causes

A possible cause of the alarm is as follows:

  • Cause 1: IP addresses of ports at both ends are not configured with IP addresses, or the ports are not in the same network segment.

  • Cause 2: Loop is performed for the link.

  • Cause 3: Port has no traffic.

Procedure

  1. Cause 1: IP addresses of ports at both ends are not configured with IP addresses, or the ports are not in the same network segment.
    1. Check whether the interconnected ports at both ends are configured with IP addresses. If no, configure IP addresses according to the network plan. For details, see Setting the Layer 3 Attributes of Ethernet Ports of Configuration Guide (Packet Transport Domain).
    2. Check whether IP addresses of the ports at both ends are in the same network segment. If no, reconfigure IP addresses according to the network plan. For details, see Setting the Layer 3 Attributes of Ethernet Ports of Configuration Guide (Packet Transport Domain).
    3. Check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to 2.
  2. Cause 2: Loop is performed for the link.
    1. Check whether a software loopback (such as a PHY/MAC layer loopback) or hardware loopback (such as loopback using network cables or optical fibers) is enabled at the alarmed port. If yes, release the loopback. Check whether the alarm is cleared. For details, see Setting the Advanced Attributes of Ethernet Ports of Configuration Guide (Packet Transport Domain)
    2. If the alarm persists, check whether there is switching equipment (such as a switch, concentrator, or hub) between both ends. If there is switching equipment, check whether a loopback is enabled on the switching equipment or a loopback occurs due to broadcast on the switching equipment. Release the loopback and then check whether the alarm is cleared.
    3. If the alarm persists, check whether port MAC addresses at both ends are the same. If they are the same, a loopback occurs. Release the loopback and then check whether the alarm is cleared.
    4. Check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to 3.
  3. Cause 3: Port has no traffic.
    1. Check whether the alarmed port reports the ETH_NO_FLOW alarm. If yes, clear the ETH_NO_FLOW alarm before first. Check whether the ARP_FAIL alarm is cleared.
    2. If the alarm persists, contact Huawei technical support engineers for handling the alarm.
