Generation and Detection of Alarms and Performance Events in the SDH Higher Order Signal Flow

The principle for locating fault is "line first, and then tributary; higher order first, and then lower order". Therefore, more attention should be paid during maintenance to alarms and performance events that are generated between the SDH port and the cross-connect unit. This section describes the higher order signal flow and higher order overhead byte processing.

In normal cases, higher order alarms and performance events may cause the reporting of lower order alarms and performance events. Figure 1-3 shows the signal flow between the SDH port and the cross-connect unit.

Based on the positions of overhead bytes in an STM-N frame, overhead bytes are classified into four types:
  • Regenerator section overhead
  • Multiplex section overhead
  • Higher order path overhead
  • Lower order path overhead

If errors occur in the first two types of overhead types, all the higher order paths are affected. If errors occur in the overhead bytes of a higher order path, only this higher order path and its lower order paths are affected.
