Description

The B3_SD alarm indicates that higher order path B3 signals received by the line board are degraded.

Impact on the System

The services transmitted on the path are affected. If higher order subnetwork connection protection (SNCP) switching is configured and switching in case of higher order signal degradation is enabled, the B3_SD alarm triggers switching in case of higher order signal degradation.

When the alarm B3_SD is generated, the system sends the HP_REI alarm to the opposite end.

Possible Causes

Possible causes of this alarm are as follows:

  • The threshold of B3 bit errors is set to a small value.
  • Fiber connectors are loosely connected, resulting in serious attenuation of received signals.
  • The clock source is incorrectly configured, or the performance of the cross-connect and timing units deteriorates.
  • The line board of the transmit unit at the opposite end is faulty.
  • The line board of the receive unit at the local end is faulty.

Procedure

  1. On the U2000, check whether the threshold of B3 bit errors is set to a small value.

    If... Then...

    The threshold is set to a small value

    Set the threshold of B3 bit errors to the default value. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to the next step.

    The threshold is set to an appropriate value

    Go to the next step.

  2. Check whether the receive optical power is within the specified range

    If... Then...
    The receive optical power is lower than the lower threshold Ensure that optical cables are intact, fiber connectors are clean, and the transmit optical power of the line board at the opposite end is normal. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to the next step.
    The receive optical power is within the specified range Go to the next step.

  3. Check whether the clock source is correctly configured and whether the performance of the cross-connect and timing units deteriorates at the local end.

    If... Then...
    The clock source is incorrectly configured Change or re-configure the clock source. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to the next step.
    The performance of the cross-connect and timing units deteriorates Replace the system control, cross-connect, and timing board. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to the next step.
    The clock source is correctly configured and the performance of the cross-connect and timing units does not deteriorate Go to the next step.
    Replacing the system control, cross-connect, and timing board interrupts services. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

  4. Perform a self-loop at the local end. If bit errors are eliminated, the line board at the opposite end is faulty. Replace the faulty line board. If bit errors increase, the line board at the local end is faulty. Replace the faulty line board.
