Description

The PORT_EXC_TRAFFIC is an alarm indicating that the traffic over an Ethernet port exceeds its threshold. This alarm is reported if the traffic over an Ethernet port exceeds its threshold.

Parameters

When you view an alarm on the network management system, select the alarm. In the Alarm Details field display the related parameters of the alarm. The alarm parameters are in the following format: Alarm Parameters (hex): parameter1 parameter2...parameterN. For details about each parameter, refer to the following table.

Indicates the directions in which the traffic over an Ethernet port exceeds its threshold:

  • 0x00: indicates the receive direction.
  • 0x01: indicates the transmit direction.

Service traffic is excessively heavy if this alarm is generated, causing network congestion.

Possible Causes

The possible causes of the PORT_EXC_TRAFFIC alarm are as follows:

  • Cause 1: The bandwidth restriction of an Ethernet port is configured too low.
  • Cause 2: The configured Ethernet port traffic is too heavy.

Procedure

  1. Cause 1: The bandwidth restriction of an Ethernet port is configured too low.
    1. Check the bandwidth restriction of an Ethernet port on the NMS. For details, see Checking the Performance Data of the Statistics Group.
    2. If the configured bandwidth restriction is too low, to increase the bandwidth restriction value or perform network expansion.
    3. Check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to 2.
  2. Cause 2: The configured Ethernet port traffic is too heavy.
    1. Check the traffic of an Ethernet port on the NMS.
    2. If the port traffic is excessively heavy, check whether a network storm occurs. If a network storm occurs, eliminate the source that transmits a large amount of invalid data.
