Generation and Detection of Alarms and Performance Events in the SDH Lower Order Signal Flow

PDH services include services at rates 1.5 Mbit/s, 2 Mbit/s, 34 Mbit/s, and 140 Mbit/s. PDH services at different rates use different path overhead bytes. Therefore, the alarm signal generation modes vary accordingly. This section describes the signal flow and the procedure to handle each overhead byte by each module.


This section uses E1, E3, and E4 signal sequences as examples.

This section describes the E1 signal flow processing and alarm generation processes between PDH ports and the cross-connect unit.

Figure 1-4 shows the alarm signal flow.

As shown in Figure 1-4, the lower order part is divided into the following functional modules by overhead byte processing characteristics:
  • Higher order path adaptation (HPA)
  • Lower order path termination (LPT)
  • Lower order path adaptation (LPA)
  • PDH physical interface (PPI)
