Description

The COMMUN_FAIL alarm indicates that communication between the system control, switching, and timing board and the other boards is interrupted.

Parameters

When you view an alarm on the network management system, select the alarm. In the Alarm Details field display the related parameters of the alarm. The alarm parameters are in the following format: Alarm Parameters (hex): parameter1 parameter2...parameterN. For details about each parameter, refer to the following table.

  • parameter 1 indicates the optical port number. This parameter has a fixed value of 0x01.
  • parameter 2 and parameter 3 indicate the channel number. para[2] has a fixed value of 0x00. para[3] has a fixed value of 0x03, which indicates inter-board communication.
  • parameter 4 and parameter 5 are reserved and have a fixed value of 0xff.

Possible Causes

Possible causes for the COMMUN_FAIL alarm are as follows:

  • A board is reset.
  • A board has poor contact with the backplane.
  • A board is faulty.
  • A slot is faulty.

Procedure

  1. Observe indicators on the board or query board reset records to check whether the board is in the reset state.
    If... Then...

    The board is in the reset state

    Wait for 5 minutes until the board reset state ends. Check whether the alarm is cleared.

    The board is not in the reset state

    Go to the next step.

  2. Reseat the alarmed board. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared.
    If... Then...

    The alarm is cleared

    No further action is required.

    The alarm persists

    Proceed to the next step.
  3. Replace the alarmed board and check whether the alarm is cleared.
    If... Then...

    The alarm is cleared

    No further action is required.

    The alarm persists

    Proceed to the next step.
  4. Contact Huawei technical support engineers to handle the slot fault.

    NOTE:
    • A slot usually becomes faulty due to broken pins or bent pins. Remove the board, and use a torch to check whether any pins are broken or bent.
    • If a vacant slot is available, insert the board in the vacant slot and update the data on the U2000 so that the board can work normally.
