Description

The BIP_SD alarm indicates that lower order signals (BIP-2) on the board are degraded. This alarm is generated when the board detects that the number of BIP-2 bit errors in the V5 byte crosses the preset threshold (10-6 by default).

Parameters

When you view an alarm on the network management system, select the alarm. In the Alarm Details field display the related parameters of the alarm. The alarm parameters are in the following format: Alarm Parameters (hex): parameter1 parameter2...parameterN. For details about each parameter, refer to the following table.

Parameter 1

Indicates the optical port number. The parameter has a fixed value of 0x01.

Parameter 2, Parameter 3

Indicate the VC-12 path ID.

Impact on the System

Services are affected. If lower order subnetwork connection protection (SNCP) switching is configured and switching in case of lower order signal degradation is enabled, the BIP_SD alarm triggers switching in case of lower order signal degradation.

When the BIP_SD alarm occurs, the system sends the LP_REI alarm to the opposite end.

Possible Causes

Possible causes of this alarm are as follows:

  • A high-level bit error alarm, such as B1_EXC, B1_SD, B2_EXC, B2_SD, B3_EXC, or B3_SD, is generated.
  • The optical power is abnormal.
  • The transmit unit at the opposite end is faulty.
  • The receive unit at the local end is faulty.
  • The cross-connect unit is faulty.

Procedure

  1. Check whether the board that receives services reports a high-level bit error alarm, such as B1_EXC, B1_SD, B2_EXC, B2_SD, B3_EXC, or B3_SD.

    If... Then...
    The B1_EXC, B1_SD, B2_EXC, B2_SD, B3_EXC, or B3_SD alarm is reported Clear the B1_EXC, B1_SD, B2_EXC, B2_SD, B3_EXC, or B3_SD alarm. Then, check whether the BIP_EXC alarm is cleared. If the BIP_EXC alarm persists, go to the next step.
    The B1_EXC, B1_SD, B2_EXC, B2_SD, B3_EXC, or B3_SD alarm is not reported Go to the next step.

  2. On the U2000, check whether the transmit optical power of the board at the opposite end is within the specified range.

    If... Then...

    The transmit optical power of the board at the opposite end is out of range

    Go to 4.

    The transmit optical power of the board at the opposite end is within the specified range

    Go to the next step.

  3. On the U2000, check whether the receive optical power of the board at the local end is within the specified range.

    If... Then...

    The receive optical power of the board at the local end is out of range

    Go to 6.

    The receive optical power of the board at the local end is within the specified range

    Go to 7.

  4. Perform a cold reset on the board at the opposite end by using the U2000 or by reseating the board. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared.

    If... Then...

    The alarm persists

    Replace the optical module or the board. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to the next step.

    The alarm is cleared

    No further action is required.

  5. Replace the system control, cross-connect, and timing board at the opposite end. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared.

    Replacing the system control, cross-connect, and timing board interrupts services. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

    If... Then...

    The alarm persists

    Contact Huawei technical support engineers to handle the alarm.

    The alarm is cleared

    No further action is required.

  6. Perform a cold reset on the board at the local end by using the U2000 or by reseating the board. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared.

    If... Then...

    The alarm persists

    Replace the optical module or the board. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared. If the alarm persists, go to the next step.

    The alarm is cleared

    No further action is required.

  7. Replace the system control, cross-connect, and timing board at the local end. Then, check whether the alarm is cleared.
