Checking Networkwide Fiber Connections

Fibers are connected in different manners for different networking schemes. Incorrect fiber connections result in commissioning errors and affect the services that are running normally. To prevent incorrect fiber connections that affect the commissioning and service configuration, you must check and ensure that the fibers are connected correctly according to the actual network topology.

Prerequisites

  • The network topology must be known to the commissioning personnel.
  • The equipment must operate normally.

Procedure

  1. Check the fiber connection on each node according to the network topology.

    • See Figure 1-1. Check the fiber connection of a two-fiber ring.
    • See Figure 1-2. Check the fiber connection of an unprotected chain.
    • See Figure 1-3. Check the fiber connection of a 1+1 or 1:1 linear multiplex section (MS).
    NOTE:

    Optical fibers in a ring network (two-fiber ring) are required to be connected in the direction of the primary ring. That is, the east optical interface of the local station is connected with the west optical interface of the opposite station.

  2. Optional: If the commissioning personnel is on the site, check and ensure that the LOS indicator on the board is off.

    NOTE:

    If the LOS indicator of an optical port is off, the optical port can receive signals properly.

NOTE:

To easily describe and configure two pairs of optical interfaces at an ADM station, the left direction of the interfaces is referred to as the west and the right direction of the interfaces is referred to as the east. In principle of service configuration, by default, signals are transmitted by the east and received by the west in the counterclockwise direction.

Figure 1-1 shows the fiber connection of a two-fiber ring.
