Configuring Sub-Rate Transparent Transmission Services

Some remote terminal units (RTUs) in the electric power industry can be controlled and managed at remote sites but cannot be remotely managed in the control center in a centralized manner. To resolve this issue, deploy the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system in the control center and configure point-to-point RS232 serial port services on the transmission devices between the control center and sites.

Networking Diagram

This section describes the networking of NEs.

Figure 2-27 shows the networking diagram for sub-rate transparent transmission services. This solution can transmit sub-rate services at a rate of 0 kbit/s to 19.2 kbit/s. In this example, the V.24 protocol is used as the interface protocol.

This topic considers the OptiX OSN 580 as an example to describe the board layout. In the case of other products, the configuration method is the same, except for the slots. For the slot information, see the Hardware Description of the relevant product.

Service Planning

This section describes the parameters required for configuring sub-rate transparent transmission services.

Each of NE 1 and NE 2 requires a 64 kbit/s service channel. Table 2-24 provides the timeslot allocation of a 64 kbit/s service channel.

  • The sub-rate services occupy the SDH_TU-65 channel during the transmission at the PCM port side.
  • The sub-rate services occupy the first VC-12 timeslot in the first VC-4 (VC4-1:VC12-1) on the SDH link between NE 1 and NE 2 during the transmission at the SDH network side.

Configuration Procedure

This section describes the procedure for configuring sub-rate transparent transmission services.

Prerequisites

Procedure

  1. Configure a pulse code modulation (PCM) service on NE 1.
    1. Configure the port for receiving and transmitting a PCM service.



      Click Apply.

      NOTE:

      In this example, retain the default values for the other parameters on the Serial Port Management page. Plan the parameters according to the actual networking. For details about the parameters, see Parameters for Serial Port Management.

    2. Configure a 64 kbit/s service.

    3. Configure the cross-connection between the PCM service and an SDH link.

  2. Configure a PCM service on NE 2.

    Follow instructions in 1 to configure a PCM service on NE 2.

  3. Check whether the service is correctly configured by following instructions in Testing Sub-Rate Services.
  4. Enable the performance monitoring function for the NEs by following instructions in Enabling NE Performance Monitoring.
  5. Back up the configuration data of the NEs by following instructions in Backing Up the NE Configuration Data to the SCC Board.

Follow-up Procedure

Because no RTS or DTR cable is used, RTS and DTR alarms are reported to the NMS, which does not affect services. To mask RTS and DTR alarms for a DXM board, perform the following operations:

  1. In the NE Explorer, select the desired DXM board and choose Alarm > Alarm Suppression.
  2. On the Alarm Suppression page, set Status to Suppressed for DTR and RTS alarms.
