Creating Fibers

On the NMS, you can create fibers, Ethernet network cables, serial port cables, and virtual fibers.

Creating SDH Optical Fibers by Searching for the SDH Optical Fibers on the NMS

After having searched for the NEs, a software commissioning engineer needs to search for the relevant fibers in the data center before commissioning the equipment.

Prerequisites

  • Fibers must be connected to the optical interfaces of each NE. No fault or alarm affects the communication of optical ports.
  • The boards of each NE must be created on the U2000.
  • You are an NM user with Maintenance Group rights or higher.

Procedure

  1. Choose File > Discovery > Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link from the Main Menu.
  2. In the pane on the left, select one or more ports of the NE and click Search. Then, the progress bar is displayed, indicating the progress of the search.

    NOTE:
    • If you select the Do not search the ports with Fibers/Cable created on NMS check box, the system only searches for the ports that do not have fibers.
    • To check whether the created fibers are consistent with the actual fiber connection, deselect the Do not search the ports with Fibers/Cable created on NMS check box.
    • If you select the Do not search the ports with Fibers/Cable created on NMS check box and if the fibers are created for all the selected ports, a dialog box is displayed indicating that the search domain is null.

  3. A dialog box is displayed, indicating that the operation is successful. Click Close.
  4. Select one or more fibers from the Physical Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link List list and click Create Fiber/Cable.

    NOTE:
    • When one or more fibers are selected from the Physical Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link List list, the fibers that conflict with the selected fibers are automatically displayed in the Logical Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link List list. If there is any conflicting fiber, refer to Step 5 and delete the conflicting fiber before creating fibers.

    • During the fiber creation, if all the selected fibers are in Already created state, the system displays the message No fiber to create.

  5. Select one or more conflicting fibers (namely, the fibers of which the Conflict with logical link(Y/N) parameter is set to Yes in the Misconnected Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link list) from the Logical Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link List list. Click Delete Fiber/Cable.

    If conflicting fibers are detected during the creation, delete the conflicting fibers on the U2000 before you start creating new fibers.

Creating Ethernet Cables in the Packet Domain by Searching for the Cables on the NMS

You can detect fiber connections on a specific optical port by performing link search on the NMS. If a link does not exist on the NMS, you can create the link immediately. To create a network on the NMS, you can search for fiber connections on all optical ports and create fibers networkwide after board configuration is completed.

Prerequisites

  • You are an NM user with Maintenance Group rights or higher.
  • Fibers are connected to optical ports on all NEs.
NOTE:

Specify the IP address range before IP addresses are automatically allocated to ports. For details on how to specify the IP address range, see step 1.

Procedure

  1. Optional: Set the IP address range for ports.
    1. Choose Configuration > IP Address Management from the Main Menu.
    2. In the displayed dialog box, click New to set the IP address range for ports.



  2. Choose File > Discovery > Link from the Main Menu.
  3. Optional: In the Link Search window, select one or more options including Links not exist in the NMS, Links exist in the NMS, Conflicting links, and Links to be deleted. (The first option is mandatory.)
  4. In the left pane, select the optical ports of one or more NEs and click . A progress bar is displayed to show the link search progress.
  5. After the progress is 100% completed, a dialog box is displayed to indicate that the operation is successful. Click Close.
  6. Select one or more links that do not exist on the NMS and click Create.
  7. After the creation is completed, a dialog box is displayed to indicate that the operation is successful. Click Close. The Confirm dialog box is displayed to query "Are you sure to import links as fibers/cables?"
  8. Click OK in the Confirm dialog box. In the displayed Import Link dialog box, select one or more links.
  9. Click OK.

Manually Creating Fibers/Cables

After searching for NEs, software commissioning engineers need to create fibers/cables in the data center to commission the equipment.

Prerequisites

  • You are an NM user with Maintenance Group rights or higher.
  • The required boards must be created on each NE.

Procedure

  1. Right-click in the Main Topology and choose New > Link from the shortcut menu. Then, the Create Link dialog box is displayed.
  2. Choose Fiber/Cable > Fiber from the left pane.

  3. The parameter Create Ways can be set to Common Ways or Batch Ways. The default value is Common Ways.
  4. Click the button in Source NE. Select the source board and source port in the Select Fiber/Cable Source dialog box that is displayed.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click the button in Sink NE. Select the sink board and sink port in the Select Fiber/Cable Sink dialog box that is displayed.
  7. Click OK. Then, the created fiber is displayed between the source NE and the sink NE in the Main Topology.
  8. Right-click the created fiber and choose Detect Link from the shortcut menu. The Result dialog box is displayed, indicating the information on the fiber connections.

Creating and Managing Virtual Fibers

When the U2000 manages the SDH, PTN and WDM equipment at the same time, you can create virtual fibers for SDH or PTN equipment with WDM equipment in between, to facilitate administration.

Prerequisites

  • You are an NM user with Maintenance Group rights or higher.
  • You must create fiber connections according to the true fibers that connect the SDH and WDM equipment.

Context

  • For SDH equipment, the virtual fibers ensure the independence of automatic fiber search and SDH trail management.
  • For WDM equipment, when true fibers change into virtual fibers at the bearer layer, wavelength management is not affected even if the true fibers are deleted
  • The source and sink ports of the virtual fibers must be the SDH ports. On the source and sink ports, there must be two physical fibers that are connected to the WDM equipment.
  • The virtual fiber does not support the expansion function.

U2000

Procedure

  1. Right-click in the blank space of the Main Topology, and choose New > Link from the shortcut menu.
  2. In the Create Link dialog box, choose Fiber/Cable > Virtual Fiber.



  3. Set the attributes of the fiber or cable in the right-hand list.
  4. Click OK.

Follow-up Procedure

After creating virtual fibers, you can manage the fibers by completing the following steps:

  1. Choose Inventory > Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link > Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link Management from the main menu. The Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link Management dialog box is displayed.
  2. On the Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link Information tab page, click Filter, set filter conditions, and select the desired virtual fiber.
  3. On the Fiber/Cable/Microwave Link Information tab page, manage the virtual fiber by clicking a desired icon. For example, click Delete Fiber/Cable to delete the fiber, or click Modify Fiber/Cable and modify fiber parameters (such as Length (km) and Designed Loss(EOL)(db)) in the Modify Fiber/Cable dialog box.

Creating and Managing Layer 2 Links

When creating a packet-based network, you can manually create Layer 2 links, besides using the auto-search method.

Prerequisites

  • You are an NM user with Maintenance Group rights or higher.
  • Physical fibers between devices are connected.

U2000

Procedure

  1. Right-click in the blank space of the Main Topology, and choose New > Link from the shortcut menu.
  2. In the Create Link dialog box, choose Link > L2 Link.
  3. Set fiber parameters in the attribute list on the right.



  4. Click OK.

Follow-up Procedure

After creating Layer 2 links, you can manage the links by completing the following steps:

  1. Choose Inventory > Link Management from the main menu.
  2. In the Link Management dialog box, click Delete to delete the link or click Modify.to modify link parameters.

Creating a Virtual Link on a Smart Line Board

If an SDH or packet network uses smart line boards, you need to create virtual links.

Prerequisites

  • You are an NM user with Maintenance Group rights or higher.
  • Fibers between NEs are connected and the fibers have been created on the NMS.
  • Virtual ports have been added. For details, see Adding a Virtual Port.

Context

OptiX OSN 580 supports smart line boards.

Procedure

  1. On the Main Topology view, right-click in the blank space and choose New > Link from the shortcut menu.
  2. In the Create Link dialog box, choose Link > Virtual Link.
  3. Set fiber attributes in the right area of the dialog box.
  4. Click OK.
