Configuring Sub-rate Services

This section describes how to configure sub-rate services. Sub-rate services are used for synchronization between narrowband devices and transmission of asynchronous data services, at a rate ranging from 2.4 kbit/s to 48 kbit/s.

Networking Diagram

This section describes the networking of NEs.

Figure 2-29 shows the networking diagram for sub-rate services. NE 1 needs to asynchronously transmit user sub-rate services (such as watt-hour meter data of each house and flying status data about airplanes) to the data center. The sub-rate services occupy a bandwidth of 9.6 kbit/s.

This topic considers the OptiX OSN 580 as an example to describe the board layout. In the case of other products, the configuration method is the same, except for the slots. For the slot information, see the Hardware Description of the relevant product.

Service Planning

This section describes the parameters required for configuring sub-rate services.

To configure sub-rate services, you need to configure the sub-rate encapsulation mode for involved NEs. Table 2-32 provides the sub-rate encapsulation mode for NE1 and NE2.

Each of NE 1 and NE 2 requires a 64 kbit/s service channel. Table 2-33 provides the timeslot allocation of a 64 kbit/s service channel.

  • The sub-rate services occupy the SDH_TU-65 channel during the transmission at the PCM port side.
  • The sub-rate services occupy the first VC-12 timeslot in the first VC-4 (VC4-1:VC12-1) on the SDH link between NE 1 and NE 2 during the transmission at the SDH network side.

Configuration Procedure

This section describes the procedure for configuring sub-rate services.

Prerequisites

Procedure

  1. Configure a pulse code modulation (PCM) service on NE 1.
    1. Configure the port for receiving and transmitting a PCM service.

      Click Apply.

      NOTE:

      In this example, retain the default values for the other parameters on the Serial Port Management page. Plan the parameters according to the actual networking. For details about the parameters, see Parameters for Serial Port Management.

    2. Configure the attributes of the PDH port.

    3. Configure a 64 kbit/s service.

    4. Configure the cross-connection between the PCM service and an SDH link.

  2. Configure a PCM service on NE 2.

    Follow instructions in 1 to configure a PCM service on NE 2.

  3. Check whether the service is correctly configured by following instructions in Testing Sub-Rate Services.
  4. Enable the performance monitoring function for the NEs by following instructions in Enabling NE Performance Monitoring.
  5. Back up the configuration data of the NEs by following instructions in Backing Up the NE Configuration Data to the SCC Board.
