NETCONF Interaction Process

NETCONF Interaction Process

NETCONF API provides NETCONF function subsets in compliance with RFC. The AR functions as the NETCONF server to communicate with the NETCONF client. Figure 2-1 shows the interaction process.

Figure 2-1 NETCONF interaction process
  1. The NETCONF client initiates the SSH connection with the server. After the SSH connection is set up, go to step 2.
  2. The NETCONF server sends a hello packet to the client to notify the client of its own capability sets. After receiving the hello packet, the client returns a hello packet containing its capability sets to the server. Then the hello packet interaction is complete and the NETCONF session is set up. For the packet content, see 2.3.
  3. The client sends an RPC request to the server for configuration and management.
  4. After parsing the RPC request received from the client, the server returns an RPC reply.

The NETCONF session interaction is implemented based on the SSH protocol. NETCONF supports the mechanisms of SSH, for example, heartbeat and cipher key. For details about SSH, see RFC recommendations.
