What Is RDS?

What Is RDS?

Definition

Relational Database Service (RDS) is a cloud-based web service that is reliable, scalable, and easy to manage, and ready to use out-of-the-box.

RDS provides a comprehensive performance monitoring system, multi-level security protection measures, and a professional database management platform, allowing you to easily set, operate, and scale a relational database. On the RDS console, you can execute almost all mandatory tasks without programming, which simplifies operation procedures and reduces routine O&M workloads, freeing you to focus on your applications and business.

You need to access RDS DB instances using the Elastic Cloud Server (ECS), as shown in Figure 34-1 .

Figure 34-1 RDS service diagram
NOTE:

Currently, you can access an RDS DB instance through an ECS in the same Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) as the instance in an internal network. After enabling public accessibility, you can also access an RDS DB instance through an elastic IP address (EIP) which is bound to it.

Function

RDS mainly has the following functions:

  • You can perform the following operations to manage an RDS DB: creation, soft deletion, deletion, soft deletion restoration, query, and restart of RDS.
  • RDS DBs in a VPC can communicate with each other.
  • When creating an RDS DB, you can select a VPC, add a network interface card (NIC), and select a security group.
  • After an RDS DB is created, you can restart, create backup, change parameter groups, reset passwords, and change database ports.
