What Is Cloud Server Backup Service?


Cloud Server Backup Service (CSBS) creates backups of Elastic Cloud Server (ECS) to ensure data security and accuracy.


CSBS has the following functions:

  • ECS backup
  • Policy-driven data backup
  • Backup data management
  • Backup replication and saving
  • ECS data restoration using backups or replicas

Restrictions and Limitations

  • CSBS provides cloud DR protection to ECSs created by CloudOpera ServiceCenter and fails to provide DR protection to other ECSs created by platforms like MANO.
  • Elastic Volume Service (EVS) disks of an ECS must be deployed on the same production storage. Otherwise, the ECS cannot be backed up.
  • Crash-consistent backup of disk data is supported. Application-consistent backup is not supported.
  • An ECS can be added to a CSBS instance only.
  • An ECS with shared volumes (one ECS disk is shared by multiple ECSs) cannot be backed up.
  • CSBS does not support consistent backup of multiple ECSs.
  • System backup and restoration are supported. All EVS disks of an ECS must be backed up or restored at the same time. File- or directory-level restoration is not supported.
  • EVS disk snapshots generated during backup will occupy space of the production storage. (The space occupied by the EVS disk snapshots is equal to the service change amount of the original EVS disk during the snapshot retention period.)
  • It is not recommended to back up an ECS whose capacity exceeds 4 TB.
  • Backup for the VMware VMs managed by FusionSphere OpenStack is supported (only for Type II and Type III scenarios).
    • ECSs in the heterogeneous VMware environment interconnected through HiCloud cannot be backed up.
    • Heterogeneous VMware system backup does not apply to ECSs configured with bare disks, RDM disks, disks connected to a shared SCSI controller, or SR-IOV.
    • When backing up a VMware cloud server, you are not advised to add new EVS disks to the ECS; otherwise, the backup may fail.
    • You are not advised to use the vCenter/ESXi to add disks to VMware ECSs. Backup and restoration of VMware ECSs are not supported.
    • Backup for the data stored in the vVOL and vSAN production storage is not supported.
  • BMS ECSs cannot be backed up.
  • The advanced SAN storage solution is required for the production storage (one EVS disk of ECSs corresponds to one LUN on the storage device).
  • An ECS can be added to a CSBS instance only.
  • In the same region, cross-AZ replication and recovery are supported. For different regions, cross-region replication and local recovery are supported but cross-region recovery is not supported.
