DS-Lite Server

After DS-Lite shields the IP address of hosts on a private network, an internal server on the private network cannot be accessed by devices on a public network. Users on the public network want to access an internal server, such as a web or FTP server.

The internal server function can be used. An internal server is manually specified, and a stack mapping between the private and public network information is configured, which allows public network users to access the internal server through a DS-Lite device. The mapping can be:
  • "private IP address of the internal server and port number and private WAN IPv6 interface address on the CPE" and "public IP address and port number"
  • "private IP address of the internal server and private WAN IPv6 interface address on the CPE" and "public IP address"

In Figure 4-3, the internal server function is implemented on a DS-Lite device to map a private IPv4 address of 10.1.1.2 and an IPv6 address of 2001::1 to a public IPv4 address of 192.168.178.65. This function enables hosts on a public network to access the private network server at 10.1.1.2. The process of implementing the internal server function is as follows:
  1. On the DS-Lite device, static forward and reverse entries for DS-Lite translation are configured manually.
  2. A public network host sends a request to access a private network server, and the DS-Lite device receives the service request.
  3. The DS-Lite device searches for a DS-Lite entry that matches the request packet's destination IP address and port number, and converts the destination IP address and port number to the private network IP address and port number recorded in the matching entry. Then, the DS-Lite device sends the packet to the target private network server through an IPv6 tunnel.
  4. The target server sends a response to the DS-Lite device. The DS-Lite device searches for a DS-Lite entry that matches the response packet's source IP address and source port number, and converts the source IP address+source port number to the public IP address and public port number recorded in the matching entry. Then, the DS-Lite device sends the packet to the public network.
