Installing a CPU

Procedure

  1. Power off the G560 V5. For details, see Powering Off the Compute Node.
  2. Remove the G560 V5. For details, see Removing the G560 V5.
  3. Place the G560 V5 on the ESD floor.
  4. Remove the cover. For details, see Removing the Cover of the G560 V5.
  5. Determine the location for installing the CPU. Figure 5-8 shows the numbering and locations of CPUs.

  6. Take a spare CPU out of its ESD bag.

    CPUs on the same server must have the same BOM number (that is, the same model). A CPU model corresponds to a BOM number. Figure 5-9 shows the location of a CPU model.

  7. Install the CPU carrier.

    1. Take a new CPU carrier out of its ESD bag.
    2. Align the notch in the center of one CPU edge with the protrusion on the CPU carrier and secure it.

      Ensure that the CPU corner marked with a triangle is in the corner of the carrier with a triangular hole.

    3. Bend the other edge of the CPU carrier in the direction of the arrow.

    4. Release the CPU carrier so that the other edge of the CPU clips into place.
    5. Ensure that all latches are securely closed and the carrier is on the same plane as the CPU. Press down the titled corners of the carrier if any.

  8. Paste thermal compound.

    1. Check that the CPU surface is clean. Use a tissue to clean off any residual thermal paste.
    2. Determine the area on the CPU that will be in contact with the heat sink, and paste 0.4 ml of thermal compound on the area.
      NOTE:

      The thermal compound injector has volume marks.

      Figure 5-12 shows the methods for pasting thermal compound.

    3. Use a clean card to smear the thermal compound over the entire center of the CPU.

      The thermal grease layer is as thick as a common piece of paper. Figure 5-13 shows the smeared thermal compound layer. Ensure that the thermal compound is evenly and fully painted.

  9. Attach the carrier to the heat sink.

    1. Install the CPU carrier on the heat sink and ensure that all retaining clips have been inserted.

      Ensure that the CPU corner marked with a triangle is in the notched corner of the heat sink.

    2. Place the CPU and heat sink assembly upside down on the desk and check whether the carrier is properly attached to the heat sink. If the carrier is not properly attached, attach it again firmly.

  10. Install the CPU and heat sink.

    1. Take out the CPU protective cover.

      Keep the protective cover horizontal to prevent damaging the socket pins.

    2. Use light to check the CPU socket pins from different angle to see whether there are twisted pins or foreign objects.

      If twisted pins or foreign objects are found, stop installing the CPU and contact Huawei technical support.

    3. Align the two diagonal holes of the heat sink with the retaining clips on the CPU socket and gently position the heat sink in place.

      Keep the assembly horizontal to avoid damaging socket pins.

    4. Install a heat sink.

    Tighten the two diagonal screws (corresponding to 1 on the heat sink label) on the heat sink. See (1) Figure 5-17. Then tighten the two middle screws (corresponding to 2 on the heat sink label). See (2) in Figure 5-17.

  11. Install the cover. For details, see Installing the Cover of the G560 V5.
