This section describes basic operations involved in SDH service configuration.

Configuring Virtual Ports and Mapping in End-to-End Mode

Before configuring services on a universal line board, configure virtual SDH or PKT ports and mapping for the board according to the service plan.

Prerequisites

  • You must be an NM user with "NE operator" authority or higher.
  • The universal line board has been installed and its logical board has been created on the NMS.
  • An OCh path has been created.

Context

This configuration mode applies when all NEs on the network use universal line boards. It does not apply when one segment of the OCh path uses an OTU board, OTN tributary board, or OTN line board as a regeneration station or SDH cross-connections exist on the network.

Procedure

  1. Choose Service > WDM Trail > Configure Service Mapping from the main menu.
  2. Set the subnet type to Ring subnet or Chain subnet.
  3. Double-click the NE for which service mapping needs to be set on the main topology on the right side.
  4. Click Query Server Trails of Segment.

  5. Click Trail Name in the table on the left side and select the OCh path.

  6. Set Service Mapping and Carried Service.



    NOTE:
    • If Service Mapping is set to ETH, Carried Service can be set to ODU0, ODU1, ODU2, ODUflex.
    • If Service Mapping is set to SDH, Carried Service can be set to ODU1, ODU2.

  7. Click Details. The details about service mapping are displayed in the lower right of the window.
  8. Click Channel to select the channel for service mapping.

  9. Click Configure. The selected service mapping is created by the NMS.

Follow-up Procedure

After service mapping has been configured, ODUk server layer paths are formed. Based on these paths, users can configure SDH service paths and packet service paths directly.

Configuring Path Overhead for SDH Services

The path overhead is configured for services, which helps network maintenance personnel to maintain the network.

Configuring Trace Byte

The trace byte is used by the receive end to confirm if it has a continuous connection with the transmit end. The trace byte can be set to any identical character for equipment of the same vendor but if the equipment is from different vendors, the trace byte must be set to the characters previously specified to ensure successful interconnection.

Prerequisites

  • You are an NMS user with "Maintenance Group" authority or higher.
  • When the cross-connections of the VC4/VC3/VC12 levels are created, you can query or set the trace byte of the VC4/VC3/VC12.

Impact on System

Incorrect configuration of the trace byte causes interconnection failure.

U2000

Procedure

  1. Select the required NE, right-click it, and choose NE Explorer from the shortcut menu.
  2. Select the type of the trace byte.

    Perform the following operations

    J0 byte

    In the NE Explorer, select a board and choose Configuration > Overhead Management > Regenerator Section Overhead from the Function Tree.

    J1 byte(VC4 Path Overhead)

    In the NE Explorer, select a board and choose Configuration > Overhead Management > VC4 Path Overhead from the Function Tree. Click the Trace Byte J1 tab.

    J1 byte(VC3 Path Overhead)

    In the NE Explorer, select a board and choose Configuration > Overhead Management > VC3 Path Overhead from the Function Tree. Click the Trace Byte J1 tab.

    J2 byte(VC12 Path Overhead)

    In the NE Explorer, select a board and choose Configuration > Overhead Management > VC12 Path Overhead from the Function Tree. Click the Trace Byte J2 tab.

    NOTE:
    9800 M24 does not support setting the trace byte of VC3 and VC12.

  3. Click Options and the Options dialog box is displayed. Select the processing mode for the read and write attributes of the overhead bytes.

    NOTE:
    • You cannot select the mode for the J0 byte.
    • The U2000 has two kinds of processing modes for the read and write attributes of the J1 byte: Extended Mode and Standard Mode. The U2000 has a stronger processing ability for the read and write attributes of the overhead bytes in the extended mode than in the standard mode.

  4. Right-click the trace byte and choose the trace byte input mode from the shortcut menu.



    NOTE:
    • Choose Copy All Form Received and the contents of the trace byte received are automatically copied to the table.
    • Choose Manual Input to customize the contents of the trace byte.

  5. Click Apply. The Confirm dialog box is displayed.
  6. Click OK. A prompt appears telling you that the operation was successful. Click Close.

Configuring C2 Byte

The C2 byte indicates the multiplexing structure of the VC frame and the service types contained in the VC frame.

Prerequisites

  • You are an NMS user with "Maintenance Group" authority or higher.
  • The cross-connection must be created on the NE.

Impact on System

Incorrect configuration of byte C2 causes interconnection failure.

U2000

Procedure

  1. On the Main Topology, right-click the required NE and choose NE Explorer from the shortcut menu.
  2. Select the service level of the C2 byte.

    If the service level of the C2 byte is

    Perform the following operations

    VC4

    In the NE Explorer, select a board and choose Configuration > Overhead Management > VC4 Path Overhead from the Function Tree. Click the Signal Flag C2 tab.

    VC3

    In the NE Explorer, select a board and choose Configuration > Overhead Management > VC3 Path Overhead from the Function Tree. Click the Signal Flag C2 tab.

    NOTE:
    9800 M24 does not support setting the C2 byte of the VC3.

  3. Click Options and the Options dialog box is displayed.
  4. Set Switch Mode to Extended Mode and click OK.

    NOTE:
    • The mode must be set to Extended Mode. You can then set the C2 byte.
    • The U2000 has two kinds of processing modes for the read and write attributes of the overhead bytes, which are Extended Mode and Standard Mode. The U2000 has a stronger processing ability for the read and write attributes of the overhead bytes in the extended mode than in the standard mode.

  5. Set the values of C2 to be Sent and C2 to be Received.
  6. Click Apply and the Confirm dialog box is displayed.
  7. Click OK and a prompt appears telling you that the operation was successful. Click Close.

Managing SDH Services

This topic describes how to create, modify, and delete SDH services.

Creating the SDH Service

To add or drop services between a processing board and a line board to transmit services on an SDH network, you need to create SDH cross-connections from the processing board to the line board.

Prerequisites

  • You must be an NM user with "NE monitor" authority or higher.
  • An SDH network is a synchronous system and has high requirements on clock synchronization. Therefore, ensure that SDH clocks have been configured before configuring services and features. For details, see "Configuring Clock".
  • To use a universal line board to receive and transmit SDH services, you must configure virtual ports and mapping. For details, see Configuring Virtual Ports and Mapping in End-to-End Mode.
  • When the port is set to the SDH line mode, you do not need to configure virtual ports and mapping relationships.

NMS

Procedure

  1. In the Workbench view, double-click Main Topology to display the main topology.
  2. Choose Service > SDH Trail > Create SDH Trail from the main menu.
  3. In the NE Explorer, open the operation window and set parameters.

  4. Click Browse and select Source, Sink, and a timeslot range.

  5. After confirming service-layer route information, click Apply. The service creation is completed.

Verifying the Service Configuration

According to the alarm reported on the U2000 and MSP switching status, you can check whether the service configuration is correct. In addition, you can obtain the service switching time from the SDH test meter.

Prerequisites

  • The physical topology of the network has been created.
  • NEs, boards, and fibers have been successfully created on the U2000.
  • The SDH test meter has been correctly connected to the source end and the sink end, and the corresponding service type and rate have been configured.
  • You must be an NM user with "NE administrator" authority or higher.

U2000

Background Information

When the service type and rate are set on the test meter, the "SIGNAL", "PATTERN", and "FRAME" indicators of the 37718 SDH analyzer turn green from red and are constantly on. If no alarm indicator is on the test meter, the SDH test meter is normally connected to the network.

Test connection diagram

As shown in Figure 6-1, the SDH test meters are respectively connected to the source end and sink end of the network to be tested. At the same time, the U2000 can communicate with the network to be tested.

Precautions

Add an appropriate optical attenuator to the OUT optical interface and IN optical interface on the board that is directly connected to the SDH meter. In this case, the damage due to excessive optical power can be prevented for the test meter and board.

Procedure

  1. Respectively enable the SDH test meters at the source end and the sink end to monitor the service switching in the network.
  2. In the Main Topology, click the source NE and then right-click the NE to choose NE Explorer from the shortcut menu. In the board directory tree in the left window, select the line board for service transmission and then choose Configuration > SDH Interface from Function Tree.
  3. In the right window, select By Function. Choose Laser Switch from the drop-down list. Set Laser Switch to Off.
  4. Click Apply. Confirm the relevant information in the displayed dialog boxes. Close the Operation Result dialog box.

    NOTE:

    By performing steps 2-4, you can close the laser that transmits services. In this case, the service in the working path is interrupted and the service switching condition is met.

  5. Choose Fault > Browse Current Alarm from the Main Menu on the U2000.
  6. Click OK in the Filter dialog box. In the Browse Current Alarm window, you can view the LASER_SHUT alarm reported by the line board whose laser is shut down on the source NE, and the R_LOS alarm reported by the line board on the sink NE.
  7. The service interruption time read from the RESULT TS window on the test meter is equal to the service switching time.

    NOTE:

    On the test meter, the LONGEST and SHORTEST parameters in the RESULT TS window record the longest switching time and the shortest switching time when the switching is performed for multiple times. The LAST parameter records the time of the last switching.

  8. Query the switching state and service state on the U2000 to check whether the configuration is correct.

    NOTE:

    The query of the MSP switching status is different from the query of the SNCP switching status. Refer to Steps 9-11 for querying the service status on the MSP. Refer to Steps 12-13 for querying the SNCP service status.

  9. Choose Service > SDH Protection Subnet > Maintain SDH Protection Subnet from the Main Menu on the U2000.
  10. Choose the Protection Subnet Maintenance tab on the right side of the SDH Protection Subnet Common Attributes pane. Query East Status and West Status. If the status is "Signal Fail Switching - Span", or "Lockout of protection-Span", the MSP switching is successful.



  11. Choose Fault > Browse Current Alarm... from the Main Menu on the U2000. If no service alarm is reported for the working path, the service switching is successful.

    NOTE:

    Verify the MSP service configuration by performing steps 10-11. The results show that the configuration is successful.

  12. Click the NE to be queried in the Main Topology and then right-click the NE to choose NE Explorer from the shortcut menu. Choose Configuration > SNCP Service Control from the Function Tree.
  13. Query the parameters of Current Status, Trail Status and Active Channel to check whether the service is switched successfully.



    NOTE:

    The service switching and SNCP service configuration are successful if the following conditions are satisfied: 1. The current status is SF switching. 2. The status of the working service path is SF. 3. The status of the protection service path is normal. 4. The current path is the protection path.

Modifying SDH Services

You can modify SDH services by using the modification function provided by the U2000 or by deleting and re-creating the SDH services.

Prerequisites

You are an NMS user with "Operator Group" authority or higher.

Context

This operation interrupts the SDH services being modified.

Procedure

  1. Choose Service > SDH Trail > Manage SDH Trail from the main menu.
  2. In the Set Trail Browse Filter Criteria dialog box that is displayed, set the filter criteria to find the SDH service to be modified.
  3. Optional: If the service to be modified is active, deactivate the service. Then select the service, right-click, and choose Deactivate.

    Service deactivation interrupts the service.

  4. Click OK in the Confirm dialog box each time it is displayed. The Operation Result dialog box is displayed, indicating that the operation is successful.
  5. Click Close.
  6. After the services are deactivated, modify SDH services by following the instructions in 7 or 8.

    NOTE:
    • The method in 7 allows you to modify the service source or sink, but requires that the source and sink must be on the same board before and after the modification.
    • If you fail to modify an SDH service using the method in 7, you can modify the service by deleting and re-creating a service, as shown in 8.

  7. Optional: Manually modify an SDH service.
    1. Select the service to be modified and click Create/Modify > Modify Trail. The Modify Trail dialog box is displayed.
    2. Modify the source port, sink port, or timeslot setting.

      NOTE:
      • If the service level is VC4, you can only modify the source timeslot or sink timeslot, but cannot modify both of them at the same time.

    3. Click OK. The Operation Result dialog box is displayed, indicating that the operation is successful.
    4. Click Close.
    5. In the Manage SDH Trail dialog box, select the modified service, right-click, and choose Activate.
    6. Click OK. The Operation Result dialog box is displayed.
    7. Click Close.
  8. Optional: Delete an SDH service, and then create a new SDH service.
    1. Select the desired service, right-click, and choose Delete.
    2. Click OK. The Operation Result dialog box is displayed, indicating that the operation is successful.
    3. Click Close. The service is deleted.
    4. Create the service again as required by following instructions in Creating the SDH Service.

Deleting SDH Services

When an SDH service is unnecessary, you can delete it.

Prerequisites

You are an NMS user with "Operator Group" authority or higher.

Procedure

  1. Choose Service > SDH Trail > Manage SDH Trail from the main menu.
  2. In the Set Trail Browse Filter Criteria dialog box that is displayed, set the filter criteria to find the SDH service to be deleted.
  3. Optional: If the service to be deleted is active, you should deactivate the service. Select the service to be deleted, right-click, and choose Deactivate.

    Deactivation will interrupt services.

  4. Select the service to be deleted, right-click, and choose Delete.
  5. In the Confirm dialog box displayed, click OK.
  6. In the Operation Result dialog box displayed, click Close.

Deleting Protection Subnets

After an SDH protection subnet is created, trails are stored on both the U2000 and NE. You can delete the trails of the network layer or NE side as required.

Prerequisites

  • Protection subnets have been successfully created.
  • You must be an NMS user with the administrator or higher permission.

Context

  • Delete from the NM: Only the trail at the network layer is deleted on the U2000 side. The deleted trail is not applied to the NE. Moreover, the service is not affected. Generally, this method is adopted to synchronize the trail information between the network layer and the NE layer on the U2000. After the trail is deleted from the network layer, you can search for it again based on the service information at the NE layer.
  • Delete from the NE: Deletes the protection subnet data stored on the U2000 (including NE layer and network layer) and NE.
    NOTE:
    Exercise caution because this operation may negate the validity of protection.
  • Delete All from the NM: Deletes the network layer data of all protection subnets from the U2000. Like "Delete from the NM", the efficient running of NE devices will not be affected.

Procedure

  1. Navigation path.

  2. Query all the protection subnets that meet the filter

  3. Select one or more protection subnets, right-click them and choose Delete from the NM, Delete from the NE, or Delete All from the NM from the shortcut menu to delete them.

Configuring the Service Mapping Path for a VC-4 Channel

Three AU3 services occupy a VC-4 channel. You can configure a 3*AU3 service mapping path for the VC-4 channel.

Prerequisites

You are an NMS user with "Maintenance Group" authority or higher.

Context

  • Only the S216 board supports configuration of service mapping paths for VC-4 channels, and the service mapping paths for VC-4 channels need to be configured only when the S216 board is a gateway board. If the S216 board is not a gateway board, configure service mapping paths for SDH higher-order VC-4 channels or lower-order VC-3 channels.
  • A 3*AU3 service is a special service that binds three VC-3 channels for higher-order cross-connections.
  • In a 3*AU3 service mapping path, you can enable desired VC-3 channels and perform overhead processing and alarm monitoring for the VC-3 channels.

Procedure

  1. Right-click an NE in the main topology and choose NE Explorer from the shortcut menu.
  2. Select a desired board in the NE Explorer, and choose Configuration > SDH Interface from the function tree.
  3. Select VC4 Channel from the By Board/Port(Channel) drop-down list.
  4. Select a VC-4 channel and set Signal Mapping Path to 3*AU3.

  5. Select a VC-3 channel, check or set VC3 Inspect to Enable.
