Overview of AMI


The Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a complete network system that performs automated meter data reading and controls smart meters. It is a mature electrical power industry Internet of Things (IoT) application and applies to communication networks of other smart meters, such as energy meters and gas meters and so on.

As shown in Figure 2-1, AMI consists of the following components: smart meter (meter for short), data concentrator unit (DCU) gateway, communication network, data collection platform (DCP), Enterprise Energy Module (EEM), and the third-party application system.
  • Meter

    Record up to 1 hour of electricity consumption and exchange information with other devices to implement monitoring and accounting.

  • DCU gateway

    Collect and store data of meters and exchange meter data and electricity exception information with a DCP. Currently, AR531GPe-U-H is used as DCU gateway.

  • Communication network

    DCU gateways and DCP communicate using FE/SFP or 3G. DCU gateways and meters communicate over RS485, power line communications (PLC) channels.

  • DCP

    delivers collection tasks to terminals, receives collection task execution results, and reports collection quality data and collection results to the EEM.

  • EEM

    Provide the graphical interactive interface and manages the DCP cluster and terminals. It creates collection tasks, and assigns and delivers tasks to the DCP for processing.

  • Third-party application system

    Connect to the EEM to obtain data of smart meters and perform operations such as data statistics collection and report analysis. It helps electric power companies to control electricity of consumers.


Traditional meter data reading systems use manual meter data reading. Manual meter data reading wastes manpower, is prone to errors, and has difficulties in data input and statistical analysis. In addition, traditional meter data reading systems suffer from severe line loss and cannot prevent power theft.

The AMI system overcomes these drawbacks. It is capable of automatic meter data reading, pre-payment, power-theft deterrence, load control, line loss analysis, and energy efficiency management, effectively reducing grid operation and maintenance costs, improving grid management and efficiency, and conserving energy.


The AMI system establishes bidirectional communication between power systems and users, facilitates management, significantly reduces maintenance costs, and enhances services of power companies.
