Replacing a PCIe Card

This topic describes how to replace a PCIe card from an I/O module. For methods of replacing a PCIe card from a node, see the node user guide.


  • A PCIe card is faulty.
  • A new PCIe card needs to be installed.
  • A PCIe card needs to be replaced with a new model.


  1. Preparations

    You have powered off the server node on which the target I/O module is installed.


    Back up all data on the server node before the power-off.

  2. Spare parts

    Obtain a spare PCIe card and packing materials, for example, an ESD bag. Place them less than 0.5 m (1.64 ft) away from the cabinet.

  3. Data

    Cabinet number, chassis number, and the slot number of the PCIe card to be replaced.

    Locate the PCIe card to be replaced based on the preceding information, and label the PCIe card panel for identification.

    Confirm and record the configuration information on the port of the PCIe card to be replaced.

    Precisely mark the cable connection position on the I/O module for the PCIe card to be replaced, and remove the power cable.

  4. Tools

    ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves


  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Push the ejector release button fastening the ejector lever, and release the button. See (1) in Figure 5-13.


    I/O modules support only warm swap. Ensure that the target server node data is backed up and the node is powered off.

  3. Press and hold down the ejected button, hold the handle, and pull the I/O module out gently. See (2) in Figure 5-13.

  4. Open the cover of the I/O module. See (1) in Figure 5-14.
  5. Slowly lift the PCIe card out of the slot. See (2) in Figure 5-14.

  6. Place the removed PCIe card in an ESD bag.
  7. Take a spare PCIe card out of an ESD bag.
  8. Hold the upper edges of the PCIe card with both hands, align the connecting part of the card with the slot, align the support with the convex on the I/O module panel and vertically insert the PCIe card downwards into the slot. See (1) in Figure 5-15.
  9. Close the cover of the I/O module. See (2) in Figure 5-15.

  10. Insert the I/O module horizontally into the slot until the I/O module snaps into the chassis, as shown in Figure 5-16.

  11. Power on the target server node.
  12. Check the PCIe card. If the activity indicator on the PCIe card is steady green, the PCIe card is running properly.
