Replacing a Subrack

Replacing a Subrack

Scenario

  • The chassis is faulty.
  • The system backplane is faulty.
  • The Fan Transit Unit (FTU) is faulty.
  • The mounting ear is faulty.
  • The chassis needs to be repaired.

Prerequisites

  1. Matters for Attention
    • Two persons are required to move and install a chassis.
    • Do not transport a chassis equipped with server nodes. You should transport an empty chassis or equipped only with filler panels. Otherwise, the chassis may fall down, causing damage to the chassis or injury to the human body.
    • The handles of the PSU, fan module, and other parts cannot bear the weight of the entire chassis. When you move a chassis, move it by holding the bottom of the chassis.
  2. Preparations
  3. Spare parts

Obtain a spare chassis and packing materials. Place them less than 0.5 m (1.64 ft) away from the cabinet.

  4. Spare part check

Take out the spare chassis. Ensure that the chassis is in good condition, and there is no oxidation, corrosion, or damage. You also ensure that there is no missing part.

  5. Data

Cabinet number of the chassis to be replaced.

Locate the chassis based on the preceding information, and label the chassis for identification.

  6. Tools
    • Phillips screwdriver
    • ESD gloves
    • Ladder

Procedure

  1. Remove all components in the chassis, including the server node (with external devices, for example, the USB DVD-ROM drive), PSU, fan module, I/O module, and management module.

For details about how to remove all the components, see the corresponding chapter in this manual.

    NOTICE:
    • The server node is heavy. Move the server node by holding its bottom. Otherwise, the server node may fall down, causing damage to itself or injury to the human body.
    • Precisely mark the positions for all components, and install them in original slots.

  2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the captive screws on the chassis. See (1) in Figure 5-17.
  3. Pull the chassis horizontally along the guide rails until the chassis is removed from the cabinet. See (2) in Figure 5-17.

    Figure 5-17 Removing a chassis

  4. Place the removed chassis into a packing bag.
  5. Take a spare chassis out of a packing bag.
  6. Work with another person to lift the chassis by holding its left and right sides, and slowly move it close to the cabinet.
  7. From the front of the cabinet, push the chassis along the guide rails into the cabinet. Align the holes on the mounting ears on both sides of the chassis with the floating nuts on the slide rails of the cabinet. See (1) in Figure 5-18.
  8. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the captive screws on the mounting ears to secure the chassis to the cabinet. See (2) in Figure 5-18.

  9. Install all components in the chassis according to the identification, including the server node (with external devices, for example, the USB DVD-ROM drive), PSU, fan module, I/O module, and management module.

For details about how to install all the components, see the corresponding chapter in this manual.

  10. Connect all power cables according to the identification.
  11. Power on the chassis. For details, see Powering On.
  12. Check the chassis operating status. The chassis is operating properly if its status indicator is steady green.
