Overview of CSS


A Cluster Switch System (CSS) combines two clustering-capable switches into a single logical switch, as shown in Figure 3-3. A CSS is also called a cluster.

CSS technology development has gone through the following two stages:
  • Traditional CSS

    It consists of two CSS connection modes: clustering through CSS cards on MPUs and clustering through service ports.

  • Cluster Switch System Generation 2 (CSS2)

    It sets up a CSS by connecting CSS cards on switch fabric units (SFUs). In addition to sharing CSS features with traditional CSS, CSS2 supports 1+N backup of MPUs.

    • S9310 and S9310X switches (first available in V200R010C00) can set up a cluster using CSS cards on MPUs and SFUs and using service ports. The S9310 and S9310X can use SFUs.
    • MPUs and SFUs on the S9310 and S9310X have integrated CSS cards, removing the need to install CSS cards.




CSS2 has the following advantages over traditional CSS:
  • Clustering through CSS cards on SFUs

    Unlike the service port connection mode, this connection mode enables control packets and data packets of a cluster to be forwarded only by SFUs without going through LPUs. CSS2 minimizes the impact of software failures, reduces the risk of service interruptions caused by LPUs, and also significantly shortens the transmission latency. Compared with the connection mode through CSS cards on MPUs, this mode allows for simpler cable connections and faster system startup because SFUs and MPUs start simultaneously.

  • 1+N backup of MPUs in a cluster

    A dual-chassis CSS can work normally as long as one MPU in any chassis is running normally. Therefore, CSS2 is more reliable than the service port connection mode, in which every chassis must have at least one MPU working normally, and more flexible than the connection mode through CSS cards on MPUs, in which strict hardware restrictions exist. Unless otherwise specified, CSS refers to both traditional CSS and CSS2.


In addition to high forwarding performance, CSS technology provides high network reliability and scalability, while simplifying network management.

  • High reliability

    Member switches in a CSS work in redundancy mode. Link redundancy can also be implemented between member switches through inter-chassis link aggregation.

  • High scalability

    Switches can set up a CSS to increase the number of ports, bandwidth, and packet processing capabilities.

  • Simplified configuration and management

    After two switches set up a CSS, they are virtualized into a single switch. You can log in to the CSS from either member switch to configure and manage the CSS.
