Table 3-8 lists software configurations for establishing a CSS by connecting CSS cards.

Setting the CSS card connection mode

Before connecting two switches to establish a CSS, set the CSS card connection mode on both switches.

Switches that support the CSS card connection mode are connected using CSS cards by default.

Configuring a CSS ID

The two member switches in a CSS must use different CSS IDs (1 and 2). Switches with the same CSS ID cannot set up a CSS. By default, all switches use CSS ID 1. Before establishing a CSS, change the CSS ID to 2 on one of the member switches.


Do not change the CSS ID of a member switch after a CSS is established. Otherwise, the CSS splits.

Setting the type of ports used for cluster connections (applicable to some switch models)

On the S9310 and S9310X, two types of ports can be used for CSS connections: 10G ports and 40G port. Before setting up a CSS, set the port type based on CSS connection requirements.

(Optional) Configuring a CSS priority

CSS priority determines the roles of member switches during role election. A larger priority value indicates a higher priority and therefore a higher probability that a member switch is elected as the master switch.

By default, the CSS priority of a switch is 1.

In a CSS using SRUHs/SRUEs/SRUKs/MFUXs, if a switch with the highest priority starts slowly, it will not be elected as the master switch. If you want a switch to be the master switch, start the switch first. When two switches start at the same time, the switch with the higher CSS priority becomes the master switch.

In a CSS using other MPU models, CSS master election does not involve comparing which CSS member starts first. The CSS member with the highest CSS priority becomes the CSS master.

(Optional) Specifying the master switch forcibly

The master switch of a CSS is typically elected when the CSS is set up. You can also forcibly specify one switch as the master switch of a CSS.

If this step is performed on two switches before they set up a CSS, the configuration does not take effect after the CSS is set up. The master switch of the CSS is elected through role election.

After a switch is manually specified as the master switch, a forcible master/standby switchover may occur when both switches run normally. If a master/standby switchover occurs, network services may be affected. Therefore, specifying the master switch forcibly is not recommended.

Enabling the CSS function and restarting switches

By default, the CSS function is disabled on a switch.

The CSS function must be enabled on both two member switches.

You can run the display css status [ saved ] command to check whether the CSS function is enabled on the current switch. If the parameter saved is set, you can view the saved CSS configuration.


  1. Run the system-view command to enter the system view.
  2. Run the set css mode css-card command to set the CSS card connection mode.
  3. Run the css port media-type { sfp+ | qsfp+ 40ge:4*xge } command to set the type of ports used for CSS connections.

    This configuration is supported only on the S9310 and S9310X.

  4. Run the set css id new-id command to set a CSS ID for the switch.
  5. (Optional) Run the set css priority priority command to set a CSS priority for the switch.
  6. (Optional) Run the css master force command to specify the switch as the master switch.
  7. Run the css enable command to enable the CSS function on the switch.


    After you enable the CSS function, the system prompts you to restart the switches. Enter Y to restart the switches; otherwise, configurations cannot take effect, and the CSS cannot be established.
